  • Reduce the risk of combine fires this fall

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest I have already seen several photos and even some video clips of harvest 2017 combine fires come across my twitter feed. On our recent CORN newsletter conference call, several Extension Educators mentioned seeing or hearing about combine fires this fall. Crop residue accumulation near a direct heat source such as the engine or exhaust system, or on and around bearings, belts and chains where heat can be generated, accounts for the majority of combine fires. I recently read an article from a Michigan State University Extension web page as well as an article from Dick Nicolai, a South Dakota Extension specialist that both provided advice regarding how to prevent and how to be prepared for combine fires. Some of their safety recommendations include: Keep the combine as clean as possible. During harvest, frequently blow dry chaff, leaves and other crop materials off the machine. Remove any materials that have wrapped around bearings, belts and other moving parts. Be sure to check those pockets that house wires or lights and where chaff accumulates.Keep wiring and fuses in proper working condition. Check wiring and insulation for rodent damage and replace as needed.Keep fittings greased and watch for overheated bearings.Use a ground chain attached to the combine frame to prevent static charges from igniting dry chaff and harvest residue, letting the chain drag on the ground while in the field.(Click here to see photo)Prior to fueling a hot combine, wait 15 minutes to reduce the risk of a spill volatilizing and igniting.Don’t park a hot combine in the shed or shop. After a long day of harvesting, smoldering hot spots may be present in the combine. If those spots suddenly flare up, at least you won’t lose the building!Keep at least one fully-charged, 10-pound ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher with an Underwriter’s Laboratory approval in the combine cab.Mount a second, larger fire extinguisher on the outside of the machine at a height easily reached from ground level.Have a plan if a fire starts. Turn off the engine; get the fire extinguisher and your phone. Get out and get help.Stay a safe distance away.Call 911 before beginning to extinguish the fire. Approach the fire with extreme caution. Small fires can flare up quickly with the addition of air (by opening doors or hatches).last_img read more

  • PTA-Endorsed SocialShield Keeps Kids Safe on Facebook and More

first_imgGuide to Performing Bulk Email Verification sarah perez Tags:#Facebook#MySpace#NYT#privacy#Product Reviews#Real World#security#social networks#Social Web#web PTA Backs SocialShieldThis news of the service’s launch comes on the heels of a Facebook partnership with the National PTA, “a formal collaboration geared towards kids, parents and teachers to promote responsible and safe Internet use,” notes the social networking site in a company press release posted June 10. Both organizations will utilize their respected resources to raise awareness as well as provide tools and resources regarding online safety, good citizenship and cyberbullying. But being aware of the problem is only half the battle, the other half is taking action. Today, that means parents often obtain their child’s social networking password, and then have to scan the site on a regular basis in order to stay informed of the child’s activities. Socialshield automates this process, a benefit not only to time-crunched parents but also to those who aren’t as tech-savvy as their children. Comparisons with Other Services Although no automated service is going to be 100% effective, something like SocialShield is considered a worthy enough solution that the PTA has partnered with the company. Like its primary competitor, SafetyWeb, SocialShield requires no software installation – the service is completely online. But SocialShield claims it can access private data, too, while SafetyWeb focuses more on what’s publicly available. The company also claims it will offer a more comprehensive educational community via its Knowledge Center which will connect parents with experts like best-selling author and former bullying victim, Jodee Blanco, as well as psychologists and law enforcement officials for help in understanding what to look for and what to do when troubling content is found. At the moment, however, the Center is sparse in comparison to SafetyWeb’s, which houses dozens of articles in addition to an informative company blog. The pricing for both services is the same as well: $10 per month (or $99 a year for SocialShield if paying annually). But it’s the PTA endorsement that may be SocialShield’s biggest selling point, at least until more comparative testing can be done between the two services. Free TrialSocialShield has been in beta testing since April and publicly launched just this week. The name “SocialShield” has also been associated with another, similar company in the past, but that was a different entity altogether, with a different board of directors. Interested parents can sign up for SocialShield here and try it for 14 days, free of charge. A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… A company called SocialShield has launched new technology aimed at keeping children and teens safe on social networking sites like Facebook. Using patent-pending “Safety Engines”, the service scans a child’s social networking profile to look for inappropriate, dangerous or otherwise suspicious content or behavior. When it finds questionable material, parents are alerted immediately via email.Protecting Children on Social Networks with SocialShieldSocialShield works across a number of sites, including popular outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. But it also supports several other social networks available today, like MySpace, Flickr, Photobucket – even LinkedIn – and dozens more.Wait, kids wouldn’t be on LinkedIn, the business networking site for adults, would they? No, probably not. But their new “friend” may be. SocialShield will actually check the friends a child adds against a number of databases, including LinkedIn, Costco.com’s customer list and lists of registered sex offenders in order to determine if a child’s friend is who they say they are. If, for example, if a child’s new friend is found on LinkedIn, they might not be the 13-year old boy they claim to be. In total, one hundred different data points are used to in these comparisons. In addition to friend verification, also included in the $99-a-year service are tools for parents like cyberbullying detection and reputation management. Parents are alerted if their child is a victim of cyberbullying (or is the bully), and the service even goes so far as to assist the parents of victims in identifying the cyberbully, documenting the problem incident and reporting the bully to a school, his or her parents, and law enforcement, if necessary. Meanwhile, SocialShield’s reputation management service looks for potentially risky behavior on the child’s part, including the posting of inappropriate photos or other content that could hurt the child’s future job search efforts or college acceptance. In these cases, the algorithm itself doesn’t make the determination about what’s considered “risky,” it’s left up the parents to decide. The service simply alerts parents photos have been posted. last_img read more

  • Forrst: Stack Overflow Meets Tumblr

first_imgFacebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Slow and Steady Wins the RaceSince launching as a rough prototype at the end of January, the invite-only service features over 3,200 users. According to Bragger, Forrst features a strong blend of U.S. and international users, with the majority of users – around 65% – registered as designers, he estimates. So far, over 5,000 posts have been published on the site, but the majority of the site’s activity – some 1,500 to 2000 items a day – comes from users liking and commenting on posts. As for being an invite-only service, Bragger says he never plans to change this setting, opting instead for a steadily growing more close-knit community that lets users “establish rapport,” as he puts it. Around 18% of the users are active each day on Forrst, and the users, he says, are kind, polite, helpful and encouraging of one another. With this very targeted audience, Forrst features highly relevant ads on its homepage – just one of several ways Bragger plans to monetize the service. The Future: Deeper Into the ForrstOne of the ways he hopes to bring in revenue while also serving the designers and developers of Forrst is to create a service through which freelancers can find clients, and vice versa. Back in March, we mentioned another service – Pick.im – that is trying to help these two parties connect easier online. Bragger says while he is hesitant to force revenue streams on his users, he thinks including this service can simultaneously provide for the users and keep the site running into the future.Right now, Bragger has investment and support from brothers Gary and A.J. Vaynerchuk, who are also his partners in the business. He originally met Gary in 2007 and eventually worked for his company Cork’d before leaving to run Forrst full-time. Bragger, who began coding at age 11 with Visual Basic before eventually building his own graphing calculator applications, has been a freelancer since leaving high-school. He also previously worked in New York for the Huffington Post.If you’d like to sign up for Forrst, you can apply for an invitation, of which a limited number are sent out daily. Or, you can beg one of the sites users for an invite, who earn invitations by actively posting and contributing to the site. Or, you can leave a comment below requesting one of a limited number of invites provided to ReadWriteWeb. Please leave your email address and a link to some of your design or code work (or some other proof that you are a designer or developer!) Tags:#design#social networks#web center_img chris cameron Just as Tumblr users can pick from text, pictures, videos and other media to publish, members of Forrst can choose from links, screenshots of projects, bits of code and questions. They can follow one another and view a stream of posts on their dashboard where they can “like” and comment on activity. Sound familiar? That’s the point. When he was inspired to create Forrst, Bragger was happy sharing random items of information on various social networks and blogging services, but he felt his needs as a developer were being underserved. He didn’t feel that Tumblr was the right place to share bits of code and screenshots of projects in hopes of getting constructive feedback, so he created Forrst.Other inspiration, he says, came from services offering similar solutions, but not the full range of features he included in Forrst. One such service, Dribbble, lets users share just screenshots (no larger than 400×300 pixels) for feedback on projects. Stack Overflow is a great place for developers to find questions and answers, but that’s it. With Forrst, Bragger is combining these ideas, and then some, and is pleased that many Forrst users also use Dribbble or Stack Overflow as well. When asked if he would mind his startup being described as “a Tumblr for designers and developers,” Forrst founder and developer Kyle Bragger said he wasn’t sure, but that he probably wouldn’t mind. After all, that is precisely what his product is – a community where users can share their links, pictures and text in a micro-blog format, with a little Stack Overflow-style Q&A thrown in. This budding startup has quickly gathered a unique and loyal community of designers and developers that are sharing thousands of posts and comments each day, and today I had to chance to chat with its founder.Built On InspirationWant an invitation to Forrst? Read on to learn how to get one!Bragger, the sole founder and developer behind Forrst (pronounced “forrest”), says he was most certainly inspired by micro-blogging services like Tumblr and Twitter. Even the site’s official blog, “Into The Forrst” is hosted on Tumblr. The micro-blog inspiration is seen clearly in both the design and in the simplicity of the user interface of Forrst. • Louis van Gaal’s galacticos power Man Utd to first season win

first_imgManchester United registered their first win in Premier League this seasonIn what appeared to be one of the most flamboyant starting line-up for the beleaguered Manchester United over the past 11 months, coach Louis van Gaal’s policy of galacticos seems to be the answer for the woes of the Red Devils.Inspired from the theory pursued by Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez to make expensive overseas signings to strengthen the squad, Van Gaal’s decorative signings were at full display during the demolition of Harry Redknapp’s lacklustre Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford on Sunday. The new-look Man Utd pumped four goals past the Rangers to finally register their first win in the Premier league this season. Well, that’s what you get after spending 150 million pounds(250 million dollars) in the transfer market.Once worn-out, the Red Devils clearly thrived from the spectacular passes and burst of speed from their 60-million-pound signing Angel Di Maria – who was undoubtedly the best man in a red shirt today. The former Real Madrid winger and midfield talisman got Man Utd in front with a devious low free-kick in the 24th minute, beating QPR goalie Rob Green at the far post.Angel Di Maria was clearly the player of the match in Man Utd’s emphatic winIn the 36th minute, Di Maria set up Wayne Rooney whose shot was blocked but eventually hammered in the far corner by teammate Ander Herrera – who was signed from Athletic Bilbao for 29 million pounds this summer.Rooney finally got his goal with a low strike from the edge of the box, but the Old Trafford crowd went berserk after Di Maria curved in a stunning pass in the build-up to Juan Mata’s goal in the 58th minute.advertisementThe Red Devils could have easily added another goal as Colombian striker Radamel Falcao almost came close to scoring his debut goal in the 85th minute. The sharp passing and quick one-two’s, that was missing in Man Utd for quite sometime, cut a sorry figure for QPR as Louis van Gaal’s men romped to a highly-awaited 4-0 win at home.Manchester United shows his support for the team at Old TraffordThough the galacticos have undoubtedly strengthened Man Utd’s attacking prowess, but their weakness in defence was hard to miss. Matt Phillips almost scored the equalizer for QPR if it wasn’t for Jonny Evans who cleared the ball after David de Gea’s blunder. The Rangers were offered another chance in the 79th minute after United left-back Tyler Blackett misplayed a pass, allowing Eduardo Vargas to run behind him and kicking it wide.United’s staggering win has surely improved their goal difference and would also have cheered up the fans but the question remains whether Louis van Gaal’s galacticos can make up for their beleaguered defence especially against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.last_img read more

It only takes three or four passes to create a goalscoring opportunity.”“That’s not the case in Italy, where it’s not so open. The game there is very tactical and there is very little space to receive the ball.”“At first everything was new for me. It’s a new style of football. It’s different and so are my team-mates but it’s about always fighting for it and working day after day.”Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. • 2MW Array under Construction at Dugway Proving Ground

first_imgA 2-megawatt solar array under construction at Dugway Proving Ground is expected to generate 10 percent of the installation’s electricity needs while enhancing the energy security of the facility located 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.“Energy security is vital for the Army mission at Dugway. With aging infrastructure of the commercial power grid and frequent power outages, it’s critical we look at alternate methods to insure an uninterrupted power source,” said Don Smith, Dugway’s new garrison manager. The $7.7 million array requires 1,300 metal posts to hold 3,300 stationary solar panels. The array will save Dugway about $640,000 a year over 25 years, reported Army Test and Evaluation Command. The proving ground already is planning a second 2-megawatt solar array. Officials are exploring other renewable sources as well, including wind and geothermal energy. The installation is considering constructing a microgrid to integrate its various energy resources, said Sean Svendsen, Dugway’s resource efficiency manager.San Diego-based TriEco-Tetra Tech Sustainable Resources Joint Venture is building the array through a contract awarded by the Army Corps of Engineers. • Twitters disdain for thirdparty clients gets real

first_imgThere are a huge range of Twitter clients out there offering alternative ways to access Twitter. For many users, these provide a better experience. They provide a level of functionality that Twitter’s own suite of applications don’t. However, Twitter has revealed that this August it will be bringing in new restrictions and limitations on how these applications are built. Of course, for Twitter these restrictions aren’t restrictions as such; it’s actually a new developer API called ‘Account Activity API’. The reason for the change is that it will give Twitter more power and control over what developers build – it also allows them to monetize the developer API in a different way too. From blog.twitter.comThis is undoubtedly going to make applications like Twitterific significantly worse.  For Twitter, that might make some sense. It goes without saying that the platform would prefer users to use its own applications to access the service. But for developers and users of these applications, it might make life a little more difficult. What restrictions will third party Twitter clients face? Twitter will be changing the way developers of third party Twitter clients access Twitter. Back in April, Twitter explained the changes it planned to make to it’s developer API in a Twitter thread: Because of the delay, the date that this change will come into effect is now August 16 2018. Essentially, on that date Twitter will turn off a number of legacy services including Site Streams and User Streams. Developers will then have to migrate to the new Account Activity API. Learn more about migrating to Account Activity API here. What impact will Twitter’s change have? As already mentioned, this is going to have a big impact on the way developers build third party Twitter clients. The knock-on effect on users will be substantial. Essentially the ‘real-time’ experience of Twitter that you get in Twitter’s own applications will be missing. Users will have to refresh their Twitter feed; push notifications are unlikely to work, and Direct Messages may be hampered too, especially on mobile. A lot of people are very unhappy about the changes Twitter is making. On Twitter the response was incredibly negative: However, there was some support, or awareness for the change when it was announced… Of course, this is one step in Twitter trying to give itself a boost – the company has been struggling for some time. However, you do wonder how successful this change will be for Twitter. Although the premium Account Activity API costs around $11.60 a month, this is only open to applications with less than 250 users. Clearly, this isn’t going to be feasible for many of the leading Twitter clients with thousands of users. • Open Invention Network expands its patent nonaggression coverage in Linux system

first_imgOpen Invention Network (OIN), a non-aggression patent community, announced an expansion in its patent non-aggression coverage by updating the freedom of action in a Linux System, last week. Patents provide organizations and individuals with the right to the invention and the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention. This Linux System expansion enables “OIN to keep pace with open source innovation, promoting patent non-aggression in the core. As open source grows, we will continue to protect Linux and adjacent technologies through strategic software package additions to the Linux System” said Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network. The recent expansion comprises 151 new packages, bringing the total number of protected packages to 2,873. “While the majority of the new additions are widely used and found in most devices. The update includes a number of key open source innovations such as Kubernetes, Apache Cassandra and packages for Automotive Grade Linux” said Boehm Open Invention Network was introduced by Mr. Mirko Boehm, OIN’s director for the Linux System definition to develop a non-aggression pact between companies (especially within the field of the Linux system definition). OIN practices cross-licensing of patents for the Linux system on a royalty-free basis. This zone of cross-licensing is called OIN’s Linux System, which comprises a list of fundamental Linux software packages. Patents owned by OIN are similarly licensed royalty-free to any organization that agrees to not assert its patents against the Linux System. Open Invention Network focuses on changing the current patent system in core Linux and other open source technologies as it is being abused by a lot of organizations, deteriorating innovation significantly. These non-aggression pacts or defensive patent tools by OIN help protect the signatories against the aggressive use of patents. A report by Dr. E. Altsitsiadis, for OpenForum Academy (OFA) stresses on these issues in the current patent system, as it mentions, that companies whose business model consists of buying up patents with a goal of taking anyone who infringes them to court have grown exponentially. Technology giants are engaged in massive legal battles. This leads to public resources getting held up in expensive lawsuits, as well as it poses a significant barrier to smaller innovators who don’t always have the capacity to cover these legal costs. Just last month, Microsoft joined the Open Invention Network, making 60,000 of its patents accessible to fellow members, to embrace the open source software and open source culture. “With this update to the Linux System definition, OIN continues with its well-established process of carefully maintaining a balance between stability and innovative core open source technology,” stated Boehm.
