first_imgSouthampton keeper Angus Gunn never doubted England commitmentby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveSouthampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn has never wavered over his England commitment. The 23-year-old played under Gareth Southgate for England’s U-21s and choosing which nation to represent was never in doubt despite his dad, ex-Norwich keeper Bryan, being a proud Scotsman and winning six caps for his country.“I have always focused on England. My dad is fully Scottish, I’m half Scottish, there’s part of my heart where I look at Scotland, it’s a great country, the passion they show for their team is amazing,” said Gunn to the Mirror.“But since I started with England U-15s, I have played at every age group up until the U-21s and my ultimate dream is to play for England. If it happens then it will be the pinnacle of my career. It’s a target for all of us younger guys and now we’re all playing in the Premier League, it’s something that can help us all push each other.“It’s suddenly happened that we are all coming through.“Dean (Henderson) got promoted at Sheffield United, Aaron Ramsdale has done well at Bournemouth to get the No.1 shirt and the other guys already in the England squad have performed well for a couple of seasons now.“They are the targets for us younger guys to get towards. Everyone can improve and, personally, playing in the Premier League gives me a chance to get called up and live my dream.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

There is one where you put your head down, start complaining that you’re not playing.”The other way is you transform that frustration over not playing into a positive energy. You need to maintain a good feeling to bounce back, to show your character. That is what I try to do at training every day.”I’m a competitor. It takes a lot more to get me down. I will always fight to get back in the team. Have I spoken to Frank? No, not yet. I have nothing to say, because Tammy is doing so well. It is difficult to get a striker out of the team when he is being this successful and scoring regularly.”I just have to stay focused, to keep concentrating on what I have to do in training and show I’m ready for whenever the manager needs me.” last_img read more

  • Tuchel ‘scared’ PSG won’t make winter signing

first_imgThomas Tuchel said he will “sleep well” once Paris Saint-Germain sign a new player during the transfer window as he eyes reinforcements.PSG have been linked with star Napoli midfielder Allan in January, while Adrien Rabiot is set to leave the Ligue 1 champions. And Tuchel admits the difficulty of landing new players during the winter has him nervous. I know that the transfer window in winter is complicated.”I hope [a new player will arrive], but I’m scared too [to not have him]. When I get this recruit, I’ll sleep well.”PSG bounced back from their shock Coupe de la Ligue elimination by defeating 10-man Amiens, despite the absence of superstar Neymar.Neymar – who has been linked with a sensational return to La Liga champions Barcelona – was rested but PSG still reigned supreme thanks to Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe after the midweek defeat to Guingamp.”It was the best answer, and necessary. • Berizzo admits there is no easy way to stop Messi

first_imgLionel Messi must be stopped by a collective effort from Paraguay in Wednesday’s crunch Copa America clash, according to their head coach Eduardo Berizzo. Both teams endured disappointing starts to the continental showpiece, with Paraguay letting a two-goal lead slip in their 2-2 draw against Qatar, while Argentina were abject in a 2-0 loss to Colombia.Paraguay conceded two goals within ten minutes after the hour mark to draw the game, and their head coach is fully aware of the task that now lies ahead. Berizzo’s side face Argentina next, before their final group game against Colombia. Argentina meanwhile sit bottom of Group B after one game, and end their group campaign against Qatar. As his quest for major honours with his country trudges on, Argentina will again look to Messi for inspiration, and former Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao boss Berizzo concedes there is no easy solution when it comes to tackling the Barcelona superstar.”To annul a player like Messi is not an individual task, it is a collective task,” he told reporters ahead of taking on his native country.”When you try to neutralise him, he opens the way [for others]. So the question is not centred only on him, but on the possibilities that are generated from him for other players.”Paraguay’s late collapse against Qatar stung Berizzo and he wants to see a response from his players, particularly in terms of game management when they are in possession.”We have talked about what happened and what we have to improve,” he added.”That is control of the ball and [making sure] that the process of the match does not escape us depending on the result.”We have to sustain the plan from beginning to end.”last_img read more

  • FIFA 19 Flashback Riyad Mahrez SBC

first_imgThe 2015-16 Premier League season was a magical time. We all became believers as the country watched in awe as Leicester City beat the 5000/1 odds and lifted the Premier League trophy. One of the stars that season was Riyad Mahrez who appeared to be magical himself at times with his beautiful ball control and powerful shot.EA Sports have decided to pay tribute to that season by giving the Algerian a Flashback card relating to his 93-rated TOTS in FIFA 16. His new FIFA 19 card has the same overall rating, making it his best card in the game with 93 pace, 94 dribbling, 92 shooting, 93 passing and 80 physicality. Some of his in-game stats are outrageous, too, like his 96 acceleration, 94 long shots, 95 curve and his 99 agility. • Report: France 1 United States 2

first_imgMegan Rapinoe was the United States’ match-winner for the second game running as she netted another brace to help the holders beat hosts France 2-1 in Paris and set up a Women’s World Cup semi-final clash with England.Reign FC forward Rapinoe, who scored twice in the USA’s victory over Spain on Monday, showed no signs of distraction after her war of words with American president Donald Trump as she put her side into an early lead from which a France team featuring six players from Champions League-winning Lyon never recovered.USA have made a habit of scoring early in this competition and France knew all about the attacking threat of Alex Morgan and Rapinoe. However, France nevertheless fell behind after just five minutes when Morgan won a free-kick that experienced forward Rapinoe converted. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? An expectant crowd at a sold-out Parc des Princes awaited the response from France’s talented front four but could only watch as a USA defence marshalled masterfully by Abby Dahlkemper and Becky Sauerbrunn repeatedly slammed the door in their faces.France had won 17 of their previous 18 matches in all competitions but there was no way back for Corinne Diacre’s players after Rapinoe slid home her second after 65 minutes, despite Wendie Renard’s late consolation, and the USA will take some stopping on current form.2 – Megan Rapinoe is the first player to score two or more goals in back-to-back Women’s World Cup appearances since Marta in 2007. Double. #FIFAWWC #USA #FRAUSA pic.twitter.com/bHY3VbMrcj— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) June 28, 2019Rapinoe’s opener came when a low free-kick from the left bounced through a crowd of bodies and evaded Sarah Bouhaddi’s left hand before bulging the net.Shaken by the early goal, France steadied themselves and stemmed the flow of USA attacks but failed to muster a shot on target themselves as they struggled to compete with the physicality of Samantha Mewis and Julie Ertz in midfield.Bouhaddi was called into action early in the second half to make a double save from Mewis and Tobin Heath, before Eugenie Le Sommer snatched at a close-range chance at the other end and blazed wide.USA goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was finally tested when Valerie Gauvin’s header threatened to loop over her head but she dived backwards to claim it.France were still in the game until Renard was caught napping as Morgan’s pass fed Heath, who had a clear run to the box where she dragged the ball back to Rapinoe for an easy finish.Heath thought she had scored one of her own 10 minutes later but an offside flag ruled otherwise.Renard set up a tense finish when she headed Gaetane Thiney’s free-kick home from 10 yards, but the bullish USA defence held firm. Key Opta Facts:- The host nation has been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in each of the last four Women’s World Cup tournaments – China in 2007, Germany in 2011, Canada in 2015 and France in 2019 have all fallen at this stage.- USA have reached the semi-final in all eight of their Women’s World Cup tournaments.- USA have now won their last 10 matches at the Women’s World Cup, equalling the longest run of wins in the tournament’s history set by Norway between 1995 and 1999.- Six of France’s 10 goals at the 2019 Women’s World Cup were scored via set-pieces, with four of those scored by Wendie Renard.- USA’s Megan Rapinoe became the first player to score two or more goals in consecutive Women’s World Cup matches since Marta did so for Brazil in 2007. read morelast_img read more
