  • Concord City Council blocks proposed Wal-Mart store

first_imgCONCORD, Calif. – This city became the latest in the Bay Area to rebuff Wal-Mart late Tuesday after a divided City Council voted against a proposed shopping center that would have been anchored by the retail giant. “I don’t want to slam Wal-Mart, but we’ve worked very hard to improve the image of the city,” said Councilwoman Helen Allen, alluding to Wal-Mart’s discount prices. “I don’t want people to think Wal-Mart when they think of Concord.” Allen was one of three council members to vote against the proposed Jones Ranch project, which also would have included a Lowe’s home improvement store and an In-N-Out Burger. Two voted in favor of the complex late Tuesday, saying it would have been an asset in a sparsely developed industrial area. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Opponents said a 24-hour Wal-Mart would harm locally owned businesses. Council members in Antioch voted last month against allowing Wal-Mart to expand one of its existing stores, while city officials in Hercules plan to invoke the power of eminent domain to acquire a lot owned by Wal-Mart to prevent the retailer from moving in. last_img read more

  • PTA-Endorsed SocialShield Keeps Kids Safe on Facebook and More

first_imgGuide to Performing Bulk Email Verification sarah perez Tags:#Facebook#MySpace#NYT#privacy#Product Reviews#Real World#security#social networks#Social Web#web PTA Backs SocialShieldThis news of the service’s launch comes on the heels of a Facebook partnership with the National PTA, “a formal collaboration geared towards kids, parents and teachers to promote responsible and safe Internet use,” notes the social networking site in a company press release posted June 10. Both organizations will utilize their respected resources to raise awareness as well as provide tools and resources regarding online safety, good citizenship and cyberbullying. But being aware of the problem is only half the battle, the other half is taking action. Today, that means parents often obtain their child’s social networking password, and then have to scan the site on a regular basis in order to stay informed of the child’s activities. Socialshield automates this process, a benefit not only to time-crunched parents but also to those who aren’t as tech-savvy as their children. Comparisons with Other Services Although no automated service is going to be 100% effective, something like SocialShield is considered a worthy enough solution that the PTA has partnered with the company. Like its primary competitor, SafetyWeb, SocialShield requires no software installation – the service is completely online. But SocialShield claims it can access private data, too, while SafetyWeb focuses more on what’s publicly available. The company also claims it will offer a more comprehensive educational community via its Knowledge Center which will connect parents with experts like best-selling author and former bullying victim, Jodee Blanco, as well as psychologists and law enforcement officials for help in understanding what to look for and what to do when troubling content is found. At the moment, however, the Center is sparse in comparison to SafetyWeb’s, which houses dozens of articles in addition to an informative company blog. The pricing for both services is the same as well: $10 per month (or $99 a year for SocialShield if paying annually). But it’s the PTA endorsement that may be SocialShield’s biggest selling point, at least until more comparative testing can be done between the two services. Free TrialSocialShield has been in beta testing since April and publicly launched just this week. The name “SocialShield” has also been associated with another, similar company in the past, but that was a different entity altogether, with a different board of directors. Interested parents can sign up for SocialShield here and try it for 14 days, free of charge. A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… A company called SocialShield has launched new technology aimed at keeping children and teens safe on social networking sites like Facebook. Using patent-pending “Safety Engines”, the service scans a child’s social networking profile to look for inappropriate, dangerous or otherwise suspicious content or behavior. When it finds questionable material, parents are alerted immediately via email.Protecting Children on Social Networks with SocialShieldSocialShield works across a number of sites, including popular outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. But it also supports several other social networks available today, like MySpace, Flickr, Photobucket – even LinkedIn – and dozens more.Wait, kids wouldn’t be on LinkedIn, the business networking site for adults, would they? No, probably not. But their new “friend” may be. SocialShield will actually check the friends a child adds against a number of databases, including LinkedIn, Costco.com’s customer list and lists of registered sex offenders in order to determine if a child’s friend is who they say they are. If, for example, if a child’s new friend is found on LinkedIn, they might not be the 13-year old boy they claim to be. In total, one hundred different data points are used to in these comparisons. In addition to friend verification, also included in the $99-a-year service are tools for parents like cyberbullying detection and reputation management. Parents are alerted if their child is a victim of cyberbullying (or is the bully), and the service even goes so far as to assist the parents of victims in identifying the cyberbully, documenting the problem incident and reporting the bully to a school, his or her parents, and law enforcement, if necessary. Meanwhile, SocialShield’s reputation management service looks for potentially risky behavior on the child’s part, including the posting of inappropriate photos or other content that could hurt the child’s future job search efforts or college acceptance. In these cases, the algorithm itself doesn’t make the determination about what’s considered “risky,” it’s left up the parents to decide. The service simply alerts parents photos have been posted. last_img read more

  • Tottenham Hotspur Consider Appeal over Son Heung-min’s Red Card in Andre Gomes Incident

London: Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino hinted the club may appeal against Son Heung-min’s red card following the horrific injury suffered by Everton’s Andre Gomes in the 1-1 draw on Sunday.Pochettino — whose side were denied a first away win in the league since January with a late stoppage time equaliser from Cenk Tosun — blamed VAR for the red card as Son had been initially just booked. The 26-year-old Portuguese international’s injury — a fracture dislocation to his right ankle which he will have surgery on Monday — occurred as his momentum from Son’s trip saw him crash into Spurs defender Serge Aurier.Pochettino — whose side remain in the bottom half in 11th place with 13 points from their first 11 games — expressed his sorrow for Gomes but said a visibly distressed Son had not intended to provoke such an injury.”It was clear it was never the intention of Son to create the problem that happened afterwards,” said Pochettino.”It is unbelievable to see a red card. In that situation we need to help because the decision of the referee was a yellow card but the VAR changed the decision.”It is the latest example of it being not clear. VAR needs to check if it was a bad tackle from Son and judge the action, not what happened after.”I don’t know what will happen now (in terms of an appeal). The club will see if it is possible but what we cannot change is what happened after (the incident).”The Premier League issued a statement after the game to clarify why the card had been upgraded, in which it said: “The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge.”Pochettino expressed his gratitude in the way the Everton players handled the incident and especially the behaviour of the captain Seamus Coleman, who suffered a similar injury in March 2017.”The players from Everton were fantastic,” said Pochettino. “The captain came to the dressing room to console Son.”I want to say thank you to the players and Coleman, who came in on behalf of the squad of Everton.”Tosun said he and his team-mates could not understand what Gomes was saying.”Everybody is sad inside. Some players, they nearly cried,” said the Turkey international.”He was in shock, his eyes were open so big. He was like crying, shouting and screaming.”I just tried to hold him and speak to him. I tried to tell him to stay calm. We couldn’t understand him.”Gomes has received plenty of messages of support, ranging from players in the Portugal national team to his former team-mates at Barcelona. Among Premier League players, Dele Alli, who scored Tottenham’s goal in the match. last_img read more

  • I have got better at controlling my emotions: Nagal

first_imgBy Amanpreet SinghNew Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) He has realised the downside of having a fiery temper and steadily-rising tennis player Sumit Nagal is focussing on anger management to succeed, even though his mentor Mahesh Bhupathi feels a “feisty personality” is no crime if results are coming.Nagal achieved the biggest success of his career by winning the USD 100,000 ATP Challenger in Bengaluru, courtesy which he leapfrogged to the then career-best rank of 223.The hard-working 20-year-old from Haryana then qualified for the Tata Open Maharashtra, his maiden ATP World Tour event and in the latest rankings he is placed at a career-best 216.Nagal said his recent good performances have had a lot to do with hard yards put in for improvement in both physical and mental aspects of the game.”I have got stronger, compared to last year. Mentally, I am much much better. Last year, I lost many matches where I gave up or got mad for few minutes where I did not realise that I have already lost 4-5 games.”This year, it has got better. I am controlling my emotions, not letting it affect my games,” Nagal told PTI in an interaction, assessing his 2017 season.Often Nagal, who has shown good retrieving skills, is seen either arguing with the chair umpire after being at the receiving end of questionable calls or getting upset at himself during matches.”In practise, it was always my goal that If I get mad in matches, the priority was to control myself. Take deep breaths, think about image, where you see yourself being happy. The more you practice the better you are going to get.” Nagal admits that its an issue which has bothered him since his Under-12 and Under-14 days.advertisementAsked how he became so aggressive, Nagal said, “I dont know. Thats the way I am, because I have got a lot of anger. I get mad very quickly. I am learning to control it and put that energy, where its going to be useful.”Bhupathi, who handpicked Nagal and has supported him since his junior days, is happy with the progress he has made.”Every personality is different in sport. Sumit is definitely a feisty personality. I had talks with him. He is is a kid from Haryana. (Bjorn) Borg had a feisty personality, (John) McEnroe had a personality. We loved them because they were superstars.”Andy Murray has a personality, he is always screaming at his box. Roger Federer has a personality, so every player has a personality and Sumit has his. As long as he is moving up the rankings and doing what we want him to do, I dont think we can fault him,” Bhupathi told PTI after watching his match.Nagal, at 5 feet and 10 inches, is not among the tallest players, who can consistently produce big serves, a huge weapon in the modern game. Both Nagal and Bhupathi feel it wont be a disadvantage.”If people are tall, they have more reach but on the other hand shorter people are quicker and being quick on the court is not a bad thing. I dont think me not being 62″, 63″ is going to be a problem.”At the end of the day I cant change it. Instead of complaining about it, I am putting so much work on my fitness that it is not going to be a problem.”Bhupathi said it should not stop Nagal from cracking the top-50, citing several examples.”Its definitely not an advantage but Diego Schwartzman (57″) is 20 in the world. There is David Goffin (511″), we have got Olivier Rochus (56″), Kei Nishikori (510″). If you can run and use your legs as benefit, short height should not stop you from getting into top-50.””His game is going in the right direction, he is only 20- year-old. We need to remember that the Indians in general peak at 23-24. He has three four years of development in him for everything — strength, tactics, mental game. We have not had many 20-year-olds at 200 in the world before in our history of tennis, so I think these are exciting times for us, for Sumit especially.”Bhupathi also said Nagal has shown progress on many fronts.”Over the past year or so he was very weak on defending on the backhand, which has got a lot better. His understanding of positioning on the court in last three months, has improved. The trajectory of his career is going on the right path. Thats all we can be happy about at present.” Nagal is set to shift his training base from Germany to Valencia in Spain, where he will practise at David Ferrers academy.
