  • UN Drive Rally Time Market Health Post, Businesses Engulfed in Big Dirt

first_imgThe United Nations Drive Rally Time  Market, one health post and dozens of small and medium-size business entities and more than 55,000 residents are engulfed in a big, rotten pile of dirt.As a result, business entity owners and several small business Liberians have sounded an urgent appeal to the Municipal Government and its urban waste managers to swiftly remove the rotten garbage.Unfortunately, the only health post catering to the estimated 55,000 residents and many business entities are situated in the midst of stench and squalor at the crowded market in Central Monrovia.According to historical findings, for more than 18 years, residents, business owners and other concerned health workers continue to render services, do business and work in the crisis prone sanitation community. It may be recalled that due to the unhygienic conditions of the Rally Time Market and its proximity of nearby health hazard, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Labor Minister Samuel Kofi Woods led a major cleanup  exercise in the area.On that day of the vigorous clean up exercise by the Liberian leader and former Labor Minister Woods, 55 truckloads of rotten dirt were cleared and transported to the Whein Town Garbage Disposal site in Paynesville.Sadly, during the hectic course of the clean up exercise at the Rally Time Market, human and domestic animal skeletons were discovered buried underneath the garbage. Moreover, at the time of the dirt collection and disposal, health workers assigned at the medical facility expressed grave concern about the suitability of healthcare center few feet away from the unhygienic dumpsite at the Rally Time Market. In a swift response, following several public outcries, late last week the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) and the contracting garbage company were seen cleaning the rotten garbage at the Rally Time Market on UN Drive in Monrovia. But to date, the sentiments of the health workers have not borne any fruitful result as residents and business entities in the area continue indiscriminately to dump waste near the clogged drainage close to medical facility. On top of the sanitation crisis, a health survey of the Rally Time Market area indicates that more than 15 dozen houses built there do not have basic sanitation facilities such toilets and bathrooms.Another sanitation factor that has added to the miseries of the Rally Time Market Community is the more two decades-old drainage that is on many occasions during the Rainy Season flooded with rotten dirt that comes from Lynch Street, a few yards from the Ministry of Public Works.“Such a clustered and overcrowded community of more than 55,000 residents and dozens of business entities and no physical sanitation facilities is indeed a potential health hazard, making it a disease prone settlement,” said Mr. Davidson B. Dennis, a Monrovia sanitation commentator.Mr. Dennis, however, wondered whether with three years for the exit of the current Unity Party-led administration, Monrovia’s sanitation nightmare can be fixed, or is it indeed doomed to failure. It will be a stroke of magic and indeed a  miracle if the Liberian Government were to transform the Monrovia’s perennial sanitation crisis into an oasis of cleanliness. Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

  • Veep Taylor Wants ECOWAS Parliament Ensure 30% Women Representation

first_imgParticipants posed shortly after the opening session of the ECOWAS Parliament on Monday, August 27. De-localized meeting on ICT beginsVice President Jewel Howard Taylor has called on Speaker, Deputy Speakers and members of the Fourth Legislature of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament to ensure at least 30 percent of women representation in that body. She said that ECOWAS Parliament, as the Regional body, should implement Article 18 of the Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of the Powers of the Parliament, which says: “Each Member-State shall ensure at least 30 percent female representation in their Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliament.”Madam Taylor wants the ECOWAS Parliament to also devote greater attention to women’s empowerment, and more participation of women in politics as it has been confirmed by demographers that the female population slightly exceeds their male counterpart in our sub-region.Veep Taylor made the remarks at a resort in Monrovia during the opening session of the De-localized Meeting of the ECOWAS’ Joint Committee on Communications and Information Technology (ICT), Education, Science and Technology, Labor, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture. The meeting will end on Friday, August 31, 2018.The statement of VP Taylor came against the backdrop of the launch of ECOWAS Gender and Election Strategic Framework, which targets mainstreaming and encourages equal gender representation in politics across all 15-member states. In order to tackle the low representation of women in politics or elected positions in West Africa, a call was also made for collective effort, to ensure at least 30 per cent female representation in all levels of governments in the sub-region.In the framework, many believed, particularly those in rural areas are still hampered by socio-cultural and religious practices, inadequate financial resources, volatile political environment, political party discrimination and absence of support from relatives and the media.“Laws deliberately aimed at improving the plight of women economically and politically must be promoted and passed. The laws must prohibit discrimination against women by political parties and engender their protection against political violence,” the framework said.Accordingly, the dwindling number of women’s participation in politics has been recorded at seven percent since the 2015 elections. Women have only 6.1 percent representation in State Houses of Assembly, 3.9 per cent in the House of Representatives, 7.34 percent in the Senate, and almost zero percent in the executive arm of government. In West Africa, Nigeria ranks even lower than Ghana which has as of 2016, about 10.7 percent female representation in the parliament, and 27 percent female as cabinet ministers. Togo comes up second with about 17.60 percent women representation in its national parliament as of  2017, and 18.4 per cent in ministerial positions. Senegal has the highest representation of women in elective positions, ranking 12th in the globe for the number of women in elective position, three percent down from its initial ranking.Former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf also thanked ECOWAS Parliament for inviting her. Madam Sirleaf then called on the parliamentarians to implement the Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of the Powers of the Parliament, which she believes can promote peace and democracy in the sub-region.House Speaker Bhofal Chambers said  the country is transitioning, and so there will be many other changes, but there must be peace and justice in Liberia. He argued that for the country to have stable peace, Liberians must apply restorative justice.ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Moustapha Cisse Lo also thanked Madam Sirleaf for her leadership role played as the President of Authority of ECOWAS Commission, and President George Weah for his election and stay at the ECOWAS Parliament as head of the Liberian delegation.Amb. Tunde O. Ajisomo, Special Representative of the President of ECOWAS Commission to Liberia, outlined the significance of UNMIL Radio transitioning to ECOWAS Community Radio and Television Station.Representative Edwin Snowe is the head of the Liberian delegation. Other members are Senator Prince Y. Johnson, 3rd Deputy Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament; Representatives Clarence Massaquoi, Fata Haja Siryon, and Senator Steve Zargo.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

  • Egyptian King Salah threatens Messi, Ronaldo Ballon d’Or stranglehold

first_imgBut Salah is now second favourite with many bookmakers behind Ronaldo for this year’s award after scoring his 42nd and 43rd goals of the season in a thrilling 5-2 victory for Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final first leg. After his first strike against his former club on Tuesday, the man dubbed by fans as the “Egyptian King” stood motionless, hands raised in apology, as bedlam broke out on a night for the ages at Anfield.Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated global awards over the past decade© AFP/File Lluis GENESalah’s curling effort arrowed into the top corner with such accuracy his manager Jurgen Klopp labelled it “a genius strike”.Soon after came the forward’s signature finish, a cute dink over advancing Roma goalkeeper Alisson for his 43rd goal in 47 games for Liverpool. When Salah, 25, made the move from the Italian capital back to the Premier League just 10 months ago for 42 million euros (£37 million, $51 million), there were plenty who felt Roma had got the better deal. Salah after all was a talented player, but who often lacked an end product. It also came just a few weeks before Neymar’s move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record 222 million euros revolutionised the transfer market. The Brazilian’s desire to leave the Catalan giants was tied to his ambition to beat Messi and Ronaldo to the Ballon d’Or by stepping out of Messi’s shadow. Now, though, it is Salah who has emerged as the pretender to end the Messi-Ronaldo domination by not only scoring the quantity of goals that have become the pair’s trademark but doing it when it really matters, in the latter stages of the Champions League.“If you think he is the best in the world, write it or say it,” urged Klopp, who has been credited with bringing out Salah’s previously untapped potential.Mohamed Salah has scored 43 goals for Liverpool this season© AFP Paul ELLIS“To be the best in the world you need to do that over a longer period I think, and there are a few others that are not so bad.”Heavily left-footed, small, speedy and with a low centre of gravity, Salah’s characteristics are far more like those of Messi than the muscular goal-machine Ronaldo.“In a certain light, at certain points, it is possible to glimpse in Salah a little of Messi’s afterglow,” wrote Rory Smith in the New York Times.– Messi-like –By design or not, the instrument — which measures everything from tremors to full-on quakes — was about half a kilometre from Nou Camp stadium, home to the city’s fabled football team. And he demonstrated another Messi-like quality in showing no mercy to Roma.Chasing his first hat-trick in the Champions League, Salah would have been forgiven for going for goal as he bore down on Alisson once more after half-time.But he showed why he is considered one of the game’s more unselfish superstars by instead creating another two goals for strike partners Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. When Salah left the field to a standing ovation 15 minutes from time, Liverpool led 5-0.“Unstoppable (when Salah’s on the pitch),” said the back page of The Times. Two late Roma away goals have at least given the Italians hope of recreating the incredible comeback they staged from a 4-1 first-leg deficit against Barca in the quarter-finals.For once it is Salah’s turn to lead the way where Messi faltered on his return to the Eternal City next week.Messi is almost certain to win a La Liga and Copa del Rey double and Ronaldo could lead Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League after another bucketload of goals this season. But Salah is the coming man and after bagging the African and English players’ player of the year crowns, it is hard to back against him also conquering the world.0Shares0000(Visited 2 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah celebrates after scoring in the Champions League semi-final against Roma© AFP Filippo MONTEFORTELIVERPOOL, United Kingdom, Apr 25 – Mohamed Salah could be the man to finally break the Ronaldo-Messi duopoly at the top of world football after the Liverpool forward burnished his soaring reputation with a mesmerising Champions League performance against Roma.Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi have locked down the Ballon d’Or award for a decade, winning five gongs apiece — for the past seven years they have occupied the top two slots.last_img read more

  • COLEMAN STARS AT OLD TRAFFORD, BUT EX-DERRY STAR SINKS SHAY

first_imgSEAMUS Coleman played a starring role as Everton beat Man United at Old Trafford last night. The Killybegs footballer helped launch wave after wave of attack on a United side rapidly losing its gloss.Coleman paid tribute to new Everton boss Roberto Martinez afterwards as the blues secured their first victory at Old Trafford in 21 years. Brian Oviedo scored four minutes from time to give Everton the win.“It’s been too long really and the manager has been working hard to get us to believe we could come here and get a result,” he said.“It came on the way we’ve been playing, the way we’ve been keeping the ball and the confidence that has built. He just wanted us to play with no fear.“Earlier in the season we tried to go to City in the same way but since then the manager has had more time to instil belief in us and we’re delighted with the result. “From the sidelines all we could hear was the manager telling us to keep getting on the ball, and that was when we were 1-0 up.“We got a brilliant result against Stoke and worked hard in training on how to beat United. Thankfully we did.”He said Everton can do well this season.“Without a doubt it makes us think the top four is possible,” he said. “Coming to places like this and getting a result the way we’re playing makes us think we can finish high up the table.“This will only give us more confidence. We know we’ve to Arsenal next and they’re top but we’re looking forward to it, just like we were looking forward to this. We’ve got some good points from some tough games.” Coleman also saluted fellow full-back Bryan Oviedo for his goal.“He’s done fantastically,” he added. “It’s a blow to be missing Leighton because he’s one of the best there is but we’re happy for Bryan. He’s such a likeable character and as you see when he scores we all have a lot of time for him.“He’s waited a long time for his chance and he deserves it. It was going to have to be an injury because of the way Bainesy plays but he’s taken his chance. I’m sure he’s delighted.”Meanwhile Shay Given was unlucky not to have helped his new side Middlesbrough to a point at Derby. Despite being down to 10 men for most of the game Boro looked as if they were heading for a 1-1 draw with the Rams. But in the 90th minute former Derry City striker Connor Sammon popped up to give Derby all three points.COLEMAN STARS AT OLD TRAFFORD, BUT EX-DERRY STAR SINKS SHAY was last modified: December 5th, 2013 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:evertonseamus colemanlast_img read more
