India Today Web Desk LondonJune 10, 2019UPDATED: June 10, 2019 11:09 IST Hardik Pandya took Australian bowlers to the cleaners in the death overs (Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSHardik Pandya smahed 48 off 27 balls including 4 boundaries and 3 sixesPandya was dropped by Alex Carey off the very first ball that he faced in the 38th overPandya has been in superb form with the bat this year ever since his comeback in the Indian teamIndia all-rounder Hardik Pandya cashed in on an early reprieve during his swashbuckling innings against Australia, smashing 48 off 27 balls which gave his team the push that was needed to put up a massive total on the board in their second World Cup 2019 match in London on Sunday.Hardik Pandya was elevated up the batting order to No.4 and walked in after Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket in the 37th over. Hardik shared an 81-run partnership with Virat Kohli and did the bulk of the scoring even though the Indian captain was well-set in the middle at that time.Hardik hit three sixes and four boundaries in his brief cameo and narrowly missed out on scoring the fastest half-century in this World Cup. But his knock helped India go past the 300-run mark in the 46th over.Kohli (82), MS Dhoni (27) and KL Rahul (11 not out) then made sure to take the score past 350 which took the game out of Australia’s reach.”Alex Carey would be not so happy with what he did. Hardik was dropped first ball that cost them big time because he is someone you wouldn’t want to give him an extra chance. The first chance that he gives you better catch that ball”With Hardik having that ability to clear the boundary so effortlessly, you want to see his back when he’s going full swing you don’t want him to spend time in the middle. When we lost that wicket (Shikhar Dhawan) I was just hoping either Dhoni or Hardik should walk in and it rightly happened so,” Sachin Tendulkar told India Today after the game.advertisementRohit 57 (70)Dhawan 117 (109)Kohli 82 (77)Pandya 48 (27)Dhoni 27 (14)from #TeamIndia to post 352/5. It’s a free bat swing and during the impact he’s stable. Early on in his career he was trying to hit the ball too hard and would lose shape.”Now he’s maintaining a good shape and that centre of gravity is far more stable. • Cuban Teachers Recruited

first_imgTwenty-four Cuban teachers have been recruited to teach at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels for the 2018/2019 academic year, to boost the teaching of the sciences, Spanish and other subjects. The teachers were recruited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, in accordance with the cooperation agreement that was initially signed in 1997.They have joined 48 teachers who are currently serving within the education sector, bringing the total to 72 teachers.Speaking at the annual orientation session for the new cohort of Cuban teachers held today (August 28) at the Alhambra Inn in St. Andrew, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dean-Roy Bernard said the continuation of the programme is indicative of its important contribution to the education systemHe noted that since the inception of the Cooperation Agreement, teachers from Cuba have been assisting the Ministry, and Jamaicans overall, to achieve the objectives outlined in the Language Policy.“The Language Policy speaks to our objective of having Jamaicans being bilingual and multilingual. Most critical among all the languages is Spanish, because our neighbours are Spanish-speaking countries and for cooperation, economic development and advancement, we must join our neighbours, so this [the teaching of Spanish] is critical,” he said. For her part, Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer, School Operations in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Dasmine Kennedy, welcomed the new cohort of Cuban teachers to the island. She informed the gathering that since 1997, 369 Cuban nationals have been recruited.“The teachers have been employed to teach Spanish, mathematics, physical education, agricultural science, chemistry, physics, biology and integrated science. [They] were initially contracted to teach in Jamaican schools for two years, but this was later increased to three years following the revision of the Agreement in 2011,” Mrs. Kennedy said. She informed that in 1997, 18 teachers were recruited predominantly to teach mathematics and science subjects in secondary schools. She added that due to the magnitude of the experience and expertise of the recruits, a decision was taken in 2009 to include lecturers for tertiary institutions.“A total of 72 teachers will serve this year. Currently, there are 48 teachers who will be returning for the academic year 2018/2019 and one coordinator. On their return, 28 of the 48 teachers will commence the final year of their contracts. The remaining 20 will commence the second year of their contracts. These teachers will be joined by the 24 teachers recruited for September 2018,” Mrs. Kennedy said.last_img read more

  • 79 New Commitments To Action Made At Clinton Global Initiative America Meeting

first_imgThroughout the two-day working meeting, attendees collaborated to develop dynamic approaches for solving some of the nation’s most critical challenges by sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and generating Commitments to Action — new, specific, and measurable plans for addressing significant challenges. Among the 79 new commitments announced are programs to provide low-income and subprime consumers with alternatives to predatory loans; a project to train 500 tribal members to install and maintain solar energy systems on the Navajo Nation; and a coordinated effort to improve job quality for domestic care workers by asking employers to commit to a short list of key job quality standards for their employees.

When fully funded and implemented, new 2015 CGI America commitments will ensure that: • Nearly 210,000 jobs will be created or filled. • More than 126,000 girls and women will be positively impacted by programs to improve quality of education, increase access to employment and skills development opportunities, and invest in women as stewards of community health. • More than $11.3 million of new capital will be invested in or loaned to small- and medium-sized enterprises. • More than 111,000 students will gain access to STEM education opportunities. • More than 1.2 million people will receive access to training programs, either formal or informal (includes skills development, financial literacy, capacity building, and leadership development) • More than 160,000 educators will participate in professional development programs, equipping participants with effective educational tools. • More than 120,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents will be avoided.Since its establishment in 2011, CGI America participants have made more than 500 commitments, which have improved the lives of nearly 2.4 million people. As a result of previously made commitments, more than 920,000 people have benefitted from professional skills training; more than 500,000 children have gained access to improved quality of education; nearly $1.2 billion of new capital has been invested or loaned to small and medium size enterprises; and nearly 4.1 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses have been avoided.

In the Closing Session, President Clinton thanked Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver for hosting CGI America in Denver for the last two years, before welcoming Mayor Kasim Reed of Atlanta to announce that the Clinton Global Initiative will hold its sixth annual CGI America meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, in June 2016. Commitments to Action already underway in the state tackle critical challenges in infrastructure, education, workforce development, and more. Looking forward, 2016 CGI America attendees coming together in Atlanta will continue to join together to positively impact people’s lives in communities across the nation. To read all 79 commitments, click here. Earlier this week, President Bill Clinton concluded the fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative America (CGI America) meeting, which convened nearly 1,000 leaders from business, foundation, NGO, and government sectors to advance solutions that encourage economic growth, support long-term competitiveness, and increase social mobility in the United States.Attendees made 79 new Commitments to Action that, when fully funded and implemented, will positively impact the lives of more than 1.6 million people in the United States.

”These past two days have reinforced for me, more than ever, that when you strip away all the little things that divide us, you can see just how tied together we all are,” said President Clinton. “And, most importantly, you have done so with a bias for action and a relentless focus on the future. Because of your efforts, more than 1.6 million people will be better off.”last_img read more

  • Justice system report slams Alberta for hiding Indigenous incarceration rates

first_imgThe Canadian Press The government of Alberta is being lambasted in a review of Canada’s justice system as the only province to keep secret the number of Indigenous people it has locked up over the last five years. The criticism comes as part of an annual report card released Monday by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute that ranks the provinces and territories in terms of access to justice, efficiency, cost, public safety and support for victims.Alberta is the only province that doesn’t make public its disproportionately high Indigenous incarceration rate, said report co-author Benjamin Perrin.“It’s unconscionable to keep secret the number of Indigenous people who are being sent to jail in that province every year,” said Perrin, who is a law professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.“We flagged this as a problem in our first report in the fall of 2016. We expected (Alberta) would start giving this data, but it hasn’t.”Alberta’s Justice Department said in a statement late Monday that it missed last year’s Statistics Canada deadline because of a software turnover and would provide the information moving forward.“Due to the transition to the new system, gaps in reporting (including indigenous-related data) occurred,” the statement said. “This was communicated to Statistics Canada and other agencies and is reflected in footnotes in reporting documents where appropriate.”But Perrin said the explanation is “a bit like ‘the dog ate my homework’ kind of excuse.”“This comes at a time of very serious concern about the treatment of Indigenous people by the justice system. People have a right to know,” he said. While Indigenous incarceration rates are disproportionately high everywhere in Canada, they are especially high in Alberta, B.C., Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the report noted. The overall justice system received a mixed grade in Monday’s assessment, following last year’s inaugural review, which concluded the country suffered from a large and growing “justice deficit.”The 2017 report card celebrated a notable drop in crime rates and a boost in legal aid funding relative to the previous year, but those improvements were overshadowed by a spike in costs, lengthier court delays and the persistent over-representation of Indigenous people in prisons. The Ottawa-based think tank called for more data collection and monitoring by Statistics Canada to better identify and track problems that have, for too long, gone unacknowledged or unaddressed. The assessment called for additional research into how Canadians view the police, courts and justice system at large, as well as more information on victims of crime, including referral rates for victim services.Perrin also pointed to the need for more analysis of recidivism rates and the number of criminal cases that are stayed due to unreasonable delay.“By arming governments, police, courts and the public with this data, we hope that it can support better decision-making and law-reform efforts,” he said. The 2017 analysis dubbed Ontario the most improved jurisdiction after it rose to fourth place from seventh, while Quebec and British Columbia each dropped two rankings.Prince Edward Island continued to lead the pack, while Manitoba remained the lowest-ranked province, thanks in part to having one of the lowest victim restitution rates in the country and the highest proportion of accused offenders on remand while awaiting trial. The report also found a “shockingly high” rate of violent crime in the territories _ in some cases 10 times greater than their provincial counterparts, a situation Perrin described as “dire.”The assessment highlighted some areas of improvement, noting that, between 2016 and 2017, Canada as a whole saw a slight drop in crime rates, fewer police officers required per capita and rising support for legal aid.Among the many differences identified between various jurisdictions, a much higher proportion of accused people were found to be unlawfully at large in Quebec and Prince Edward Island compared with Nunavut, New Brunswick, or Ontario.Public confidence in the justice system and the courts were found to be lowest in Manitoba, B.C. and Quebec and highest in New Brunswick and Ontario. As for public confidence in police, the highest levels were observed in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, and lowest in Prince Edward Island, B.C. and Quebec. While the rates of police solving non-violent crimes has declined in most parts of the country over the last five years, B.C. earned the distinction of having the lowest rates of resolving both violent and non-violent crimes, at about 52 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. The federal justice department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.last_img read more

  • Identities of the dead should be preserved after disasters UN health agency

In a new manual called “Management of Dead Bodies in Disaster Situations,” the Americas’ bureau of the UN World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), says when deaths result only from disasters, the corpses do not pose a major risk for the spread of infection.“Regrettably, we continue to be witness to the use of common graves and mass cremations for the rapid disposal of dead bodies owing to the myths and beliefs that corpses pose a high risk of epidemics,” PAHO Director Mirta Roses writes in the book’s foreword. “These measures are carried out without respecting identification processes or preserving the individuality of the deceased.”Victims should not be buried in mass graves, nor should mass cremations take place if these procedures contravene local cultural and religious norms, the 176-page manual says. Bodies should be buried in a way that permits any needed later exhumation, identification, transfer and final disposal.“This is a basic human right of surviving family members,” PAHO says.Myths about the necessity of hasty mass burials came from such experiences as the 14th century “Black Death,” which claimed one-third of Europe’s 75 million people, the US National Institutes of Health’s Karl Western writes. When certain corpses may carry such communicable diseases as tuberculosis, hepatitis and HIV, the manual recommends protective ways of handling them. read more

  • Thieving duo stealing iPhones in New York reject all other smartphones

first_imgBuy an Android or BlackBerry if you don’t want your smartphone stolen, folks. Apple has received some priceless publicity from New York, where a pair of thieves have made headlines because of their choosiness. Apparently the discerning duo only wants iPhones or cash, not your crappy BlackBerry or Droid. As anyone who follows the smartphone market knows, the iPhone is still the most sought-after phone around. That popularity — coupled with its multi-hundred-dollar price tag — obviously makes the iPhone a tempting target for thieves. This particular tandem has struck twice. The first time, two victims were accosted: one had an iPhone stolen, but the other was shaken down for cash instead. Why? No iPhone. In a second incident, a female victim informed the robbers that she didn’t have an iPhone. Just to make sure, they threw her against a fence and proceeded to search her to make sure.If you’re a Columbia student and you own an iPhone, make sure you don’t bring it with you when you’re traipsing around the 500 block of 114th Street. If you don’t own an iPhone, well, you might feel like one female student who said, “It’s insulting that they don’t want my BlackBerry.” That is, of course, assuming you still want your BlackBerry. If not, well, you’re probably on the same page as the thieves and are just biding your time until you can replace it with an iPhone. It’s a sad state of affairs when criminals won’t bother to steal a competitor’s phone, but why would they if  it can’t be fenced it or won’t bring enough cash in return to justify the hassle? You win again, Apple.More at NBClast_img read more

  • Changes in Unalaska ferry service proposed for next year

first_imgCourtesy of Nancy HeiseThe Alaska Department of Transportation is proposing changes in ferry service to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor for the 2016 sailing season. On Tuesday the state agency released its draft Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) sailing schedule for next year. If approved as is, the ferry Tustumena will sail to Unalaska once in June and once in September. In May, July and August, the ferry will make the run from Kodiak to Unalaska twice a month.According to DOT spokesman Jeremy Woodrow, the proposed changes to the state’s ferry system schedule is “significantly different than previous years’ schedules.”In the past, the ferry has serviced Unalaska twice each month from May through September. State budget cuts have led to reduced sailings across the system. Woodrow said a reason the Tustumenawill come to Unalaska just once in June 2016 is because the vessel will be filling in on another route elsewhere that month. The DOT is asking for public comment on the proposed 2016 sailing schedule, found here.Written comments will be accepted via email and fax prior to November 3. Send emails to dot.amhs.comments@alaska.gov or fax to 907-228-6874.A teleconference to hear comments and consider adjustments to the Southwest and Southcentral Alaska schedule is on Wednesday, November 4th at 1:30 p.m. The toll free number to participate is 800-315-6338, conference code 03902#.Fares are not slated to increase for the 2016 season.“Fares did go up this last year, we haven’t proposed any new fare structure changes,” for the coming year, said Woodrow.Meanwhile, the AHMS is transitioning to a new reservation system.“One thing that did change for the winter bookings is the cancellation policy for the fares…to basically help fill the space on the ships more. Before we had a pretty lenient change reservation policy and now we’ve structured that more similar to what people find with the airlines,” said Woodrow.Woodrow says the new system will start accepting advance 2016 bookings through the AMHS call center in December.last_img read more

In fact, this entire investigation stems from my efforts, fully authorized under FBI rules, to set the record straight on behalf of the Bureau, and to make clear that we were continuing an investigation that people in DOJ opposed.” McCabe added that his contacts with the reporter were “not a secret,” were known to others at the FBI at the time including then-Director Comey, were typical of the exchanges with the media he regularly oversaw as deputy director and were also the kind of work he continued under Director Wray.“The investigation subsequently focused on who I talked to, when I talked to them, and so forth,” McCabe also said in his statement. “During these inquiries, I answered questions truthfully and as accurately as I could amidst the chaos that surrounded me. And when I thought my answers were misunderstood, I contacted investigators to correct them.”In January, when Wray attempted to move McCabe into another job to limit the FBI’s embarrassment when the IG report became public, McCabe abruptly announced his retirement. His plan was to use up accumulated leave he was due before his previously scheduled retirement date this month.Trump and his supporters group McCabe with what they call other bad actors inside the FBI, including two employees who exchanged text messages critical of Trump in 2016. That revelation also has embarrassed the FBI and fueled critics’ accusations that people inside the bureau abused their power to target Trump out of personal animus.A raw deal?McCabe’s supporters, led by Comey, have said before Friday’s firing that McCabe has been badly mistreated. “Special Agent Andrew McCabe stood tall over the last 8 months, when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on,” the former FBI director wrote on Twitter in late January when McCabe announced his retirement. “He served with distinction for two decades. I wish Andy well.”The FBI and Justice Department and their allies in Congress deny the charges of “bias” and say there is no deep conspiracy aimed at Trump, nor any wrongdoing in use of surveillance authority by FBI or DOJ as Republicans charge.McCabe said Friday night that the attacks on him are part of a “larger effort” to “taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally. It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation [led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller], which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.”McCabe signaled that a long fight could be ahead over how Sessions chose to end more than two decades of service to the FBI — and who and what motivated the decision to terminate him less than 48 hours before his planned retirement date.“The President’s tweets have amplified and exacerbated it all,” McCabe said. “He called for my firing. He called for me to be stripped of my pension after more than 20 years of service. And all along [my family and I] have said nothing, never wanting to distract from the mission of the FBI by addressing the lies told and repeated about us.“No more.”McCabe’s lawyer said Friday night that attacks on McCabe “have come from the White House since last summer.”“And it was quite clearly designed to put inappropriate pressure on the Attorney General to act accordingly,” attorney Michael Bromwich added. “This intervention by the White House in the DOJ disciplinary process is unprecedented, deeply unfair, and dangerous.”While Sessions said the internal investigation that led to McCabe’s firing had been “extensive and fair” and had been undertaken “according to Department of Justice Procedure,” Bromwich said the process had been rushed, limiting the time he and McCabe had to access, review, and analyze the relevant evidence in order to prepare a response.“With so much at stake, this process has fallen far short of what Mr. McCabe deserved,” Bromwich said. “This concerted effort to accelerate the process in order to beat the ticking clock of his scheduled retirement violates any sense of decency and basic principles of fairness.”McCabe said having his career end in this way was “incredibly disappointing and unfair.” But, he added, “it will not erase the important work I was privileged to be a part of, the results of which will in the end be revealed for the country to see.“I have unfailing faith in the men and women of the FBI and I am confident that their efforts to seek justice will not be deterred.”That sentiment had a familiar ring, as it echoed comments McCabe during his first appearance on Capitol Hill less than 48 hours after Comey’s firing by Trump last year.McCabe, then the acting FBI director, told members of Congress he was confident the bureau would continue to pursue the Justice Department’s Russia investigation and do its other work amidst the controversy.“You cannot stop the men and women of the FBI from doing the right thing,” he said, “protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution.”center_img Susan Walsh/APReferring to the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is shown here in a file photo, said in a statement that he accepted an internal FBI recommendation that “concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media.”Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired outgoing FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe on Friday even though he was on the doorstep of retirement and receiving his pension after two decades of service to the bureau.President Trump responded on Twitter just after midnight Saturday morning, calling McCabe’s firing “a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – A great day for Democracy.”The attorney general accepted an internal FBI recommendation that “concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor − including under oath − on multiple occasions,” Sessions said in a statement. The internal FBI investigation recommended dismissal over McCabe’s alleged “lack of candor” about contacts he had with a former Wall Street Journal reporter in 2016.“[B]ased on the report of the Inspector General, the findings of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility, and the recommendation of the Department’s senior career official, I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately,” Sessions said.“The FBI expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability. As the OPR proposal stated, ‘all FBI employees know that lacking candor under oath results in dismissal and that our integrity is our brand,’ ” Sessions also said in explaining his decision. In a statement issued immediately after his termination was announced, McCabe said the decision was politically motivated. “The big picture is a tale of what can happen when law enforcement is politicized, public servants are attacked, and people who are supposed to cherish and protect our institutions become instruments for damaging those institutions and people,” McCabe said.“Here is the reality,” he added, “I am being singled out and treated this way because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey. The release of this report was accelerated only after my testimony to the House Intelligence Committee revealed that I would corroborate former Director Comey’s accounts of his discussions with the President. The OIG’s focus on me and this report became a part of an unprecedented effort by the Administration, driven by the President himself, to remove me from my position, destroy my reputation, and possibly strip me of a pension that I worked 21 years to earn. The accelerated release of the report, and the punitive actions taken in response, make sense only when viewed through this lens.”McCabe announced his retirement from the bureau abruptly in January and it was to take effect Sunday. His dismissal, just days before he was set to retire, puts his full pension and benefits package in jeopardy and is an inglorious end to career of almost 22 years with the bureau.A longtime targetRepublicans have been attacking McCabe since the 2016 presidential campaign. His wife, Jill, ran for a state legislative seat in Virginia as a Democrat and accepted campaign contributions via then-Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Clinton loyalist. The FBI and Justice Department’s compliance offices found no problems with the situation but Republicans called it a conflict of interest.Even while he was on the campaign trail during the 2016 race and at times since taking office, Trump has complained about what he called McCabe’s bias and called for Sessions to fire him.By mid-December 2017, before McCabe was set to testify behind closed doors with the House intelligence committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., alluded to McCabe’s rocky standing.“I’ll be a little bit surprised if he’s still an employee of the FBI this time next week,” said Gowdy, who is also a member of the House judiciary committee which has oversight responsibility for the bureau, in a Dec. 15 interview with Fox News.McCabe served as the acting director of the FBI for three months in 2017, after Trump abruptly fired James Comey, and before the current director, Christopher Wray, was sworn in. McCabe made news in a congressional hearing in May by contradicting Trump. The White House had said Trump fired Comey because he had lost the confidence of the FBI’s rank-and-file agents and workers — but McCabe, when asked, said that was not so.“Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the FBI and still does to this day,” McCabe told lawmakers soon after the president had ousted Comey.Behind the scenes, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz was continuing to investigate Comey and McCabe and the bureau’s handling of an investigation into the Clinton Foundation. The IG’s office drafted a report that is believed to include the allegation that McCabe lacked candor with investigators about his contacts with a Wall Street Journal reporter. In addition, the statement from Sessions late Friday said the Office of the Inspector General and the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility also faulted McCabe for “an unauthorized disclosure to the news media.”Accordingly, the OPR recommended that McCabe lose his job.People in McCabe’s camp said earlier this week that he has an explanation for any inconsistencies in his account of the conversations with the journalist, and in each instance, he went back and corrected the record, often citing the chaos around him and the FBI at the time. He had followed up with investigators as part of the Justice Department process. In his statement Friday McCabe explained events this way:last_img read more

They also lit white candles on the school yard, where 18 trees were recently planted as a memorial to the deceased.Wessel said psychologists had talked to the students earlier this week and that all students would be allowed to attend their schoolmates’ funerals. The first burials will be held Friday, the last ones at the end of the month. One teen won’t be buried in Haltern.Wessel said the long wait that the families had had to endure before bringing their children home had been particularly difficult.“This time has ended today but at the same time today once more has been very dreadful, very brutal for the parents,” he said.“On Friday, the funerals will start over a period of two weeks, and this is another dreadful moment, to have to say goodbye to the children. Therefore this day today was cruel on the one side, but on the other hand it was important.”A spokeswoman for Germanwings said the remains of the other victims to their home countries had also begun and would likely be finished by the end of June.Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels said, in addition to individual returns, a special flight Monday would return remains of more than 30 Spanish victims to Barcelona from Marseille.
