NEW YORK — Until a week ago, rookie Chase Whitley was doing a wonderful job filling in for the New York Yankees. Two starts later, he’s beginning to look overmatched.David Ortiz hit his 450th homer, a colossal three-run drive, and Dustin Pedroia had three RBIs during his second consecutive three-hit game to lead the Boston Red Sox over Whitley and the Yankees 8-5 the night of June 29.“You’re behind in the count, you’re walking people and giving them extra baserunners, it usually leads to damage,” Manager Joe Girardi said.John Lackey (9-5) labored through five innings before four Red Sox relievers pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. Held to two runs in the first two games of the series, Boston took two of three anyway to finish a 4-6 road trip.“I always believe that when you play against guys in your division, those are series you’ve got to win,” said Carlos Beltran, who homered, doubled and finished with three hits.Mark Teixeira also went deep for the Yankees, who have dropped six of eight. Whitley (3-2) struggled for the second straight start as six New York pitchers combined for eight walks.Mostly a reliever in the minors, the 25-year-old right-hander is one of three subs holding down spots in New York’s injury-depleted rotation. He was pitching well until June 23, when Whitley was rocked for eight runs and 11 hits in 3 1-3 innings of an 8-3 loss in Toronto, ending a three-start winning streak. This time, he gave up five runs and eight hits in four-plus innings, raising his ERA from 2.56 to 4.70 in a span of two starts.“I think he had better stuff tonight,” Girardi said. “He made some mistakes in the middle that they didn’t miss. Last time, he really didn’t have his stuff.”Pedroia made a diving play at second base to limit a Yankees rally, and center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. threw out Beltran at the plate to keep the score 8-5 in the sixth. It was Bradley’s ninth assist of the season. “Changed the momentum of the game,” Red Sox Manager John Farrell said.Koji Uehara worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 19 attempts.Pedroia bounced a hit-and-run single through the right side in the third, and Ortiz was booed by the sellout crowd of 48,124 as he stepped to the plate. The slugger answered with a long drive well into the raised bleachers in right-center to make it 4-0.Ortiz tossed his bat aside and took his time on a wide trot around the bases, saluting his family in the stands as he approached third base. “My son, he always enjoys watching daddy go deep. He was dancing,” Ortiz said. The home run put Big Papi in sole possession of 37th place on the career list, two behind Adam Dunn and Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.Handed a comfortable cushion, Lackey grew frustrated and shook his head as Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter fouled off pitch after pitch in the third. They combined to see 21 pitches in consecutive at-bats, and Lackey screamed, cursed and gestured wildly when Jeter grounded an RBI single to right.Perhaps worn down a bit, Lackey gave up solo homers to Teixeira and Beltran in the fourth, cutting it to 4-3.But then Whitley and reliever Shawn Kelley threw 10 straight balls to begin the fifth, combining to walk the bases loaded with none out. Pedroia blooped a two-run single and later stayed in a rundown long enough for Daniel Nava to score from third.“I’m most frustrated with the pitch to Ortiz, obviously, and the walk to Bradley that set up the fifth. That was unacceptable,” Whitley said.(MIKE FITZPATRICK, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares
What to Wear to an Interview: 6 Tips for Men to Pick Out the Perfect Outfit Pairing the English Premier League Soccer Teams with Craft Beers from the United States Dirtbag Style Guide: 5 Lessons That Apply to Everyone When to Take Your Suit in for a Cleaning, According to the Experts Editors’ Recommendations At least that is Jonathan Meizler’s New Year’s resolution. The couture and ready-to-wear designer’s line title of work has been making waves, and it’s plain to see why. His spring collection includes some of the most innovative ties and dapper mens accessories we’ve seen in quite some time. The handsome line was featured in December at the “Anatomy of a Tie” exhibit at hpgrp Gallery in NYC. His use of simple yet unusual materials takes a timeless menswear staple to a new level of smart, and we can’t get enough. We caught up with Jonathan to talk about the importance of wearing a tie, what mediums he wants to work with next and why ‘title of work’ stands out above the rest.Men have been wearing ties for centuries. What about this simple yet striking accessory can make or break an outfit? The tie is the one accessory in which a man is able to push the envelope. Used as a reflection of one’s personality, it can define you as clean and minimal or overly garish. I’ve always been drawn toward an austere line, so an oversized print or unintentional retro pattern will totally throw off a look for me.You use materials like leather and feathers to create pieces in your collection. What made you want to explore these adornments? Were you seeing too much of the same thing in the market? When building a collection, I find it important to be as specific as possible, especially in defining a point of view in an over-saturated market. I saw an untapped niche in neckwear and felt it was the ideal foundation to build from. That said, I created ‘title of work’ as a collection with a specific identity and keenly curated point of view. I felt the necktie was a perfect canvas to showcase concepts and designs not typically associated with its status as a symbol of refinement. It’s a reality animals play a huge role in the fashion and beauty industries. Your taxidermy collection includes adornments like snake bones and raccoon teeth. Have you always been interested in this type of primordial aesthetic? Over the years, I have become intrigued with the concept of mortality and beauty in decomposition. I was able to explore these elements that play with our sense of existence. Bones, teeth and claws have been used as jewelry, decorations and money since the beginning of time.Aesthetically, a rattlesnake vertebrae bone is so beautiful, from the construction to the color and texture to how they all fit together. As an ornament, I found it to be so unexpected. Then placed with a on onyx stone, it became something else all together. If you could experiment with one material you’ve never worked with before, what would it be? How would you utilize it for ‘title of work’?The beauty of what I create is I am able to work with materials not usually associated with clothing at all. I am drawn toward steel, glass and reclaimed wood, so we will see if these elements manifest themselves into future collections. Architecture is a constant inspiration on both personal and work-related levels from the Egyptian pyramids to Italy’s basilicas and Gehry’s post-modernist structures. I am drawn toward symmetry in the asymmetrical. I feel the most successful pieces of my collection incorporate this aesthetic. Many title of work collections, past and present, were on display at your “Anatomy of a Tie” exhibition. Do you have a favorite thus far?I have a few favorites from each series – especially those that define each collection – from the simple diamond line on cashmere to the pierced barbell that works its way through the tie. The concept of bridging form and function has always inspired me, and the sterling grommet is a good example. One of the signature pieces within each collection is a hand cast, sterling silver grommet attached by a jeweler. A toggle connects the tail of the tie and goes through the grommet opening, so it works as a tie clip. When it comes to dapper dressing, what is the one tip you can offer every man to look his best?Wear a tie and a pocket square, making sure the patterns and colors coordinate without matching.Do you believe in New Year’s resolutions? If so, what is yours?Yes. Wear more ties.To learn more about title of work and to shop, visit titleofwork.com. The New Land Rover Defender Is Just as Glorious as We Expected
Facebook The watchdog says it accepted 8,197 individual complaints, which addressed an average of 1.9 issues each. That’s an 18 per cent decrease from the year prior. The Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services received 8,678 complaints about TV issues between Aug. 1, 2015, and July 31 of this year, the CCTS says in its annual report. CCTS communications officer Alyssa Esposito said in an email that the watchdog will only accept and review any TV complaints it receives on or after Sept. 1 next year. Twitter Altogether, it dealt with 7,931 issues about wireless, 4,177 issues about Internet and 3,086 issues about local phone services. That’s up 19 per cent from 7,294 similar concerns during the same period a year prior. However, the CCTS commissioner and CEO Howard Maker said in a statement that the watchdog is also concerned about a rise in objections over 30-day cancellation policies and charges after services have been cancelled. Advertisement Maker said the CCTS will continue to monitor these grievances and collaborate with stakeholders on ensuring clarity and fairness for customers. Billing was the No. 1 consumer grievance in each of the three categories. But TV complaints won’t fall under the CCTS’s mandate until next September when it will begin to assess, accept and help resolve consumer beefs about these services. Companies are prohibited from demanding customers provide 30 days’ notice to stop their wireless or Internet service. However, this year, the CCTS received 386 complaints about this practice from wireless customers (a decrease of 14.4 per cent from the year prior) and 399 complaints from Internet customers (an increase of 54.7 per cent). The largest number of all accepted complaints were registered against Bell (35.9 per cent), followed by Rogers (10.5 per cent) and Telus (seven per cent). Freedom Mobile, the company formerly known as Wind Mobile, and Virgin Mobile both represented 6.1 per cent. Currently, the CCTS can only address complaints about cellphone, land line, Internet and long-distance (including prepaid calling cards) services, as well as operator services, directory assistance and white pages directories.

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email NEW YORK, N.Y. – For stock investors, there was no shortage of drama in October.Stocks started the month modestly below a record high, only to cascade to their worst slump in two years. But after flirting with a correction, or a 10 per cent drop, the U.S. market rebounded and closed at all-time highs on the last day of the month. All told, U.S. stocks ended October solidly higher, up 2.3 per cent. The Dow Jones industrial average capped the rally by rising 195.10 points, or 1.1 per cent, to end at 17,390.52 on Friday. The Standard & Poor’s 500 rose 23.40 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 2,018.05 and the Nasdaq composite added 64.60 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 4,630.74.Both the Dow and the S&P 500 closed at record highs. It’s a remarkable turn given the month’s volatility, which at times approached levels from the 2008 financial crisis. Then again, the month has an unfortunate history for unsettling moves, with the stock market crashes of 1929 and 1987 both happening in October. This October, the market’s seesaw path was driven by fears that Europe’s economy was slipping back into a recession, worries about plunging oil prices and concerns of possible weakness in the U.S. economy. Oh, and don’t forget Ebola. Those anxieties sent the market, for the most part, straight down for two weeks. The nadir came on Oct. 15, when the S&P 500 came with a hair’s breadth of going into a correction. Investors had suspected such a drop. The last one occurred in late 2011, and historically corrections happen every 18 months or so.But just after the market came close to going into a correction, it bounced right back. Strong U.S. corporate earnings were the primary driver of the rebound as well as signs that central banks in Japan and Europe were going to do all they could to stop their economies from dragging everyone else down with them.“I don’t think it’s a surprise that we came close to a correction. We’ve been expecting one for a while. I think the bigger surprise has been how we rip-roared all the way back up,” said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management. “When you hit someone over their head with a hammer, you don’t expect them to get up immediately.”U.S. companies have been, for the most part, reporting strong quarterly results the last two weeks. Corporate profits are up 7.3 per cent from a year ago, according to FactSet, compared with the 4.5 per cent investors had expected at the beginning of the month. And any worries about the U.S. economy earlier in the month evaporated as the data rolled in, mostly recently Thursday’s data showing the U.S. economy grew at a 3.5 per cent pace last quarter.Friday’s gains were driven by the Bank of Japan, which surprised investors by announcing it would increase its bond and asset purchases by 10 trillion yen to 20 trillion yen ($90.7 billion to $181.3 billion) to about 80 trillion yen ($725 billion) annually. The announcement came after data showed that the world’s third-largest economy remains in the doldrums, with household spending dropping and unemployment ticking up.Japan’s move comes only two days after the U.S. Federal Reserve brought an end to its own bond-buying program. Investors have been hopeful that the European Central Bank might also start buying bonds to stimulate that region’s economy by keeping interest rates low and injecting cash into the financial system. That form of stimulus is called quantitative easing, also known among investors as “QE.”“The Japanese central bank has taken the QE baton from the Fed, and equity traders couldn’t be happier,” said David Madden, market analyst at IG.Japan’s stock market rose 4.8 per cent to the highest level since 2007.The Japanese currency weakened dramatically following the Bank of Japan’s announcement. The yen slumped 2.6 per cent against the dollar to 112 yen. The yen is trading at the lowest level in more than five years. Japanese companies typically like a weak Japanese yen because it makes their exported goods cheaper abroad.European stock markets rose broadly following the Bank of Japan’s announcement on hopes that the ECB could be tempted to follow Japan’s lead in stepping up stimulus measures. However, few think anything will be announced at the ECB’s next policy meeting next Thursday.“The willingness of the Bank of Japan to ease further in the fight against deflation will encourage those who think the ECB should be doing the same,” said Julian Jessop, chief global economist at Capital Economics.Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 1.3 per cent. France’s CAC 40 jumped 2.2 per cent and Germany’s DAX climbed 2.3 per cent.In other markets, the price of U.S. benchmark crude oil fell 58 cents to $80.54 a barrel in New York as increasing production from OPEC members added to already high global supplies of oil.Brent crude, used to price oil in international markets, dipped 38 cents to $85.86 in London. In other energy futures trading on the NYMEX, wholesale gasoline fell 2.6 cents to close at $2.169 a gallon, heating oil fell was flat at $2.515 a gallon and natural gas rose 4.6 cents to close at $3.873 per 1,000 cubic feet.Bond prices fell. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.34 per cent from 2.31 per cent Thursday. In metals trading, the price of gold fell $27 to $1,171.60 an ounce. Silver fell 31 cents to $16.11 an ounce and copper fell 2 cents to $3.05 a pound. Bobby Bonilla hasn’t played in a professional baseball game since 2001, yet on July 1 of this year, the New York Mets paid him $1.19 million. And they will every July 1 until 2035, as part of a deferred contract that the Mets negotiated with Bonilla after the 1999 season.

a memo from Attorney General Jeff Sessions concluding that civil rights laws don’t protect transgender people from discrimination on the job; and the scrapping of Obama-era guidance encouraging school officials to let transgender students use school bathrooms that matched their gender identitiesPresident Donald Trump briefly addressed the latest controversy as he left the White House for a political trip to Houston but left unclear how his administration plans to proceed “We have a lot of different concepts right now” Trump said “They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now you know that as well as I do and we’re looking at it very seriously” Trump added: “I’m protecting everybody” The Cabinet agency had acknowledged months ago that it was working to rewrite a federal rule that bars discrimination in health care based on “gender identity” It cited a Texas-based federal judge’s opinion that the original rule went too far in concluding that discrimination based on gender identity is a form of sex discrimination which is forbidden by civil rights laws The department said Monday it would not comment on “alleged leaked documents” It did release a statement from Roger Severino head of its Office for Civil Rights saying his agency was reviewing the issue while abiding by the 2016 ruling from the Texas-based federal judge Reed O’Connor LGBT activists who pledged legal challenges if the reported memo leads to official policy said several other courts had issued rulings contrary to O’Connor’s “For years courts across the country have recognized that discriminating against someone because they are transgender is a form of sex discrimination full stop” said Diana Flynn Lambda Legal’s litigation director “If this administration wants to try and turn back the clock by moving ahead with its own legally frivolous and scientifically unsupportable definition of sex we will be there to meet that challenge” Shannon Minter a transgender attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights called the reported plan a “cynical political ploy to sow discord and energize a right-wing base” before the Nov 6 election UCLA legal scholar Jocelyn Samuels who ran the HHS civil rights office in the Obama administration said the Trump administration would be going beyond established law if it adopted the policy in the memo “What they are saying is you do not get to decide your sex; it is the government that will decide your sex” said Samuels Omar Gonzalez-Pagan a lawyer with Lambda Legal said the proposed rule change appears to still be undergoing White House review It would need to be signed off by the departments of Justice Labor and Education which are also involved with civil rights enforcement He said “the purpose of this rule is to erase transgender people from existence to write them off from federal law and to institute a definition that is contrary to case law contrary to medical and scientific understanding and contrary to the lived experience of transgender people” While social mores enter into the debate medical and scientific experts have long recognized a condition called “gender dysphoria” discomfort or distress caused by a discrepancy between the gender that a person identifies as and the gender at birth Consequences can include severe depression Treatment can range from sex-reassignment surgery and hormones to people changing their outward appearance by adopting a different hairstyle or clothing According to an estimate by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law there are about 14 million transgender adults in the United States ___ Crary reported from New York Contact us at editors@timecom I can’t.
