  • Annan calls on both sides in the DR Congo to meet after

The UN’s Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) reports that relative calm has now been restored in the capital Kinshasa after violent incidents yesterday between supporters of President Joseph Kabila and Vice–President Jean Pierre Bemba, a spokesman told reporters in New York. A group of President Joseph Kabila’s Presidential Guards opened fire on Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba’s compound in Kinshasa yesterday afternoon, the spokesman said, adding that the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, William Lacy Swing, and a dozen members of the Committee in Support of the Transition were meeting inside. “As the shooting continued, Swing spoke on the telephone from Bemba’s residence with President Kabila and demanded that Kabila immediately bring the situation under control,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. “The shooting, however, continued for another two hours.” Mr. Dujarric added that the Secretary-General also phoned the two candidates to demand an immediate end to the violence, as well as the safe evacuation of the diplomats and civilian personnel trapped inside the residence. “The Secretary-General urged both Kabila and Bemba to meet immediately to resolve the situation in a peaceful manner,” said Mr. Dujarric. Some 150 UN peacekeepers in armoured personnel carriers brought Mr. Swing and the other dignitaries to safety, Mr. Dujarric said, adding that UN and European Union peacekeepers later deployed to Mr. Bemba’s residence and elsewhere in Kinshasa to ensure public order and safety. Additional UN peacekeepers arrived in Kinshasa from other parts of the country this morning after looting broke out there and gangs of street youths ransacked businesses and the homes of real or perceived Kabila supporters, reported the UN mission in the DRC, known as MONUC. Additional European Union forces also arrived from Gabon to help restore order. Later in the day, the Security Council backed Mr. Annan’s call for an end to the violence and for the two leading presidential candidates to meet, issuing a statement demanding that the Congolese political leadership “exercise restraint and immediately implement the ceasefire agreed between their forces.”Meanwhile, Special Representative Swing continued his efforts to broker peaceful talks between the parties, as military chiefs from the MONUC, the European force, Vice-President Bemba’s security detail and the Congolese Army met separately to secure an agreement to stop the shooting. “It is imperative that the confrontations cease immediately and that the two presidential candidates meet urgently, for the good of the democratic process and above all for the Congolese people, who have already suffered too much as a result of armed conflict,” said Mr. Swing this morning. According to provisional results of last month’s historic elections, which were released on Sunday, Mr. Kabila won 45 per cent of the vote, while Mr. Bemba garnered 20 per cent, says MONUC. The two candidates are scheduled to face off in a second round on 29 October. read more

  • Worlds first probiotic coffee offers ten times the cultures of probiotic yogurt

first_imgIf you lead a generally healthy lifestyle, or regularly experience less-than-ideal stomach issues, you’re probably well aware of probiotics. For the unaware, they are “good bacteria” — live microorganisms that reduce the amount of “bad bacteria” found inside the stomach. By reducing the amount of bad bacteria, they create a healthier stomach, and thus can reduce the frequency of general stomachaches, and can prevent acid reflux or digestive tract infections. As everyone who consumes probiotics knows, they’re usually found in yogurt, mainly because probiotics need to be kept cool to survive, and yogurt is a relatively hassle-free way to take them. If you don’t like yogurt though, you’ve generally had a tougher time taking probiotics. Thankfully, company Tipton Mills claims to have figured out a way to make probiotics survive in hotter temperatures, and has been able to add them to coffee.Developed by Ganeden Biotech, the probiotic, GanedenBC30, is able to survive heat and then stay strong enough to survive the acids inside the human body. Because the new probiotics can survive heat, they can in theory be added to a whole new range of products, such as soups. On top of that, it offers ten times as many cultures as probiotic yogurt.Anecdotally speaking, many people with stomach problems cite coffee as something that only exacerbates their issues. So if you avoid coffee every morning and have to stay awake by getting a good night’s sleep rather than drinking four cups of coffee before lunch, one that can help your stomach seems pretty amazing. If you’re interested in trying out this concoction to see if your morning cup(s) of coffee would improve your digestive system, it’ll set you back $5.49 per six-pack, or $32.49 per pack of 36.last_img read more

  • Opposition announces 100 000 for new Hellenic Festival

first_imgA new Hellenic festival in Oakleigh would be given $100 000 if the Coalition is elected in the state election on 27 November, according to an announcement on the weekend. Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nick Kotsiras, along with Liberal candidate for Oakleigh, Theo Zographos, made the announcement at the St Anargiri Feast Day in Oakleigh on Sunday. “It’s about showcasing the advantages and the merits of living in a multicultural society,” Kotsiris told Neos Kosmos. “Festivals on their own don’t solve the problem in terms of racism, but they assist in the big picture when you showcase what different cultures bring to this country.” This follows Premier John Brumby’s announcement of $1 million spending on improvements to Oakleigh’s Eaton Mall, through the Victorian Government’s $12 million Cultural Precincts and Community Infrastructure Fund. “This funding will strengthen Oakleigh’s Greek identity and help encourage more visitors to experience and enjoy the rich cultural traditions of the area,” Mr Brumby said when he announced the spending earlier this month. Mr Kotsiris said the $1 million upgrade would go ahead under a Coalition government, and the Hellenic festival would start after the work was finished. “We should showcase Oakliegh, we should showcase the Greek culture, what the Greek Australians have contributed to the area, and open it up to the wider community,” he said. The seat of Oakleigh has been held by the ALP since 1999, and the Liberal Party candidate would need a 12.4% swing to win. But Mr Kotsiris said Mr Zographos, who is 21, is in with a chance. “Gone are the days where you can assume a seat will go one way or the other,” he said. “It’s about communicating our policies, and Theo making inroads within the streets, the houses and the voters. “And I think he’s doing that.” Mr Kotsiris said he was hoping the Liberal-National coalition would win the 13 seats required to govern in their own right, but conceded it would be “a tough ask”. “People will make up their minds when they go and vote, and that’s what’s so good about our country, democracy is strong, and we have to earn the vote.” Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Le 26 septembre 2011 à 10:11 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Le 17 mai 2012 à 12:10 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

JW Marriott at Galaxy Macau named venue and Galaxy Entertainment Group named Venue Sponsor for 2019 Asian Gaming Power 50 Black Tie Gala Dinner Their combined interests amount to 53% of shares in STDM, which holds a 54% stake in Macau concessionaire SJM. The Fok Foundation, to which STDM co-founder Henry Fok transferred his shareholding in the early 2000s, controls around 26.5% of STDM – comprising half of the new alliance’s stake. The five pieces of the new alliance … “The Company” refers to Shun Tak HoldingsA research note published by Deutsche Bank overnight described the move as one of the most significant power plays in Macau’s recent history with one of the possible consequences being a move against current SJM Co-Chairman and Executive Director Angela Leong, Dr Stanley Ho’s fourth wife.“Notably, one key shareholder not in the agreement is Angela Leong,” Deutsche Bank wrote.“We see a risk that, when the current terms of board directorships expire for Leong and her associates, namely SJM’s CEO (Dr Ambrose So) and COO (Louis Ng), they may not be re-elected again. We believe the COO’s term expires in June 2019 and the other two in June 2020.”In its filing on Wednesday, Shun Tak said that the parties have endorsed a common commitment to advancing certain fundamental objectives in relation to STDM and the STDM Group, including the extension of SJM’s gaming concession which is held by its wholly-owned subsidiary SJMSA and ensuring that STDM remains the majority shareholder in SJM.The alliance said it would make “best efforts to exercise their respective powers and rights” in submitting a common proposal for the election of STDM board members when the time to vote on nominees comes, with the alliance pointing to 31 March 2019 as the next such occasion.Likewise, the group will exercise its rights in relation to the nomination of directors of SJM including Chairman and Co-Chairman.“The Parties have also agreed to submit a common proposal for the election of the Board of SJMSA,” the filing said.Formation of this alliance could prove to be one of the biggest events in Macau gaming since liberalisation of the industry almost 20 years ago, potentially leading to a seismic shake-up in control of Macau’s oldest gaming dynasty.SJM controls 20 of Macau’s 39 operational casinos, including its flagship Grand Lisboa, three “self-promoted” casinos in Lisboa, Oceanus at Jai Alai and Casino Taipa at Regency Art Hotel and 16 casinos operated by third parties under SJM’s gaming license. However, its market share has slipped considerably in recent years and it is the only one of Macau’s six concessionaires yet to open an IR in the SAR’s new gaming hub of Cotai. first_imgSony has announced that there will be an update available as soon as you take your PS4 out of the box, and installing it will enable most of the cool features we’ve been hearing about so far.If you go to use your PS4 the day you purchase it without connecting to the Internet, you may find the console is missing more than a few of the features you were promised. The ability to play Blu-ray discs will be missing, as well as most of the features that require a network or Internet connection to use. For whatever reason, these features have been enabled at the last minute, and you’ll need to download a day one update from Sony in order to use them.System Software Update 1.50 is only 300MB, so the features that you’re gaining are already baked into the OS. The update is just enabling those features. Things like remote play, screenshots and recorded gameplay, and broadcasting or spectating gameplay are on the list of unlocks. Then we have logins for multiple simultaneous users, online multiplayer, and voice commands with facial recognition via the PlayStation Camera.Sony also explained in their update announcement that some already announced features will not be available even with the 1.50 update installed. The one example provided is “suspend/resume mode” for the console. There’s clearly more missing, however, and Sony claims they will explain more about those missing features in the near future. It’s not uncommon for consoles to include day one updates with last minute fixes, but Sony being so secretive about missing features from the console at launch is cause for concern.last_img read more

  • Cancuns new urban development plan goes vertical

first_imgCancun, Q.R. — The Urban Development Program of Cancun says they have made modifications to the current urban plan for the city, which will now see vertical construction rather than horizontal. The 22 districts that make up the city will be divided into primary, secondary and suburban and will be a neighborhood with specific services and focal points says Miguel Ángel Lemus Mateos, president of the Real Estate Commission of the Caribbean Business Coordinating Council (CCE).In the primary corridors, the land use will be mixed to construct taller buildings and generate investments not only in real estate housing, but commercial and tourism that will attract other projects. The primary areas will allow highrise buildings of up to 30 stories and would apply in the areas of José López Portillo avenue, the road to Mérida and to Playa del Carmen. Highrise buildings of 15 stories would be built in areas such as Andrés Quintana Roo and Bonampak, explained explained Tayde Favila Soriano, president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI).The municipality of Benito Juarez used to consist of 180,000 hectares but was reduced to 90,000 once Puerto Morelos became its own municipality. This change was also a motivating factor for the recent modification of the Urban Development Program of Cancun.Since the announcement, some residents of Cancun are demanding municipal authorities not to approve the Plan of Urban Development because they say it would be over-densifying several areas.Although they recognized the importance of vertical growth, it is not valid to over-populate areas with 10-story buildings, adding that such a move would not be beneficial but only bring problems in the way of the supply of public services and transportation. They explained that currently in the Cumbres division, three 10-story buildings are being built, which will directly affect the residents of that area. By reprogramming this safeguard, cancer may be preventable in the aftermath of full body radiation.James DeGregori, Ph.D., investigator at the CU Cancer Center, professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the CU School of Medicine and the paper’s senior author; doctoral student Courtney Fleenor and colleagues explored the effects of full body radiation on the blood stem cells of mice. In this case, radiation increased the probability that cells in the hematopoietic stem cell system would differentiate. Only, while most followed this instruction, a few did not. Stem cells with a very specific mutation were able to disobey the instruction to differentiate and retain their stemness. Genetic inhibition of the gene C/EBPA allowed a few stem cells to keep the ability to act as stem cells. With competition from other healthy stem cells removed the stem cells with reduced C/EBPA were able to dominate the blood cell production system. In this way, the blood system transitioned from C/EBPA+ cells to primarily C/EBPA- cells.Mutations and other genetic alterations resulting in inhibition of the C/EBPA gene are associated with acute myeloid leukemia in humans. Thus, it’s not mutations caused by radiation but a blood system reengineered by faulty stem cells that creates cancer risk in people who have experienced radiation.“It’s about evolution driven by natural selection,” DeGregori says. “In a healthy blood system, healthy stem cells out-compete stem cells that happen to have the C/EBPA mutation. But when radiation reduces the heath and robustness (what we call ‘fitness’) of the stem cell population, the mutated cells that have been there all along are suddenly given the opportunity to take over.”These studies explain why radiation makes hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) differentiate and show that by activating a stem cell maintenance pathway this can be prevented. Even months after irradiation, artificially activating the NOTCH signaling pathway of irradiated HSCs lets them act “stemmy” again – restarting the blood cell assembly line in these HSCs that would have otherwise differentiated in response to radiation. When DeGregori, Fleenor and colleagues activated NOTCH in previously irradiated HSCs, it kept the population of dangerous, C/EBPA cells at bay. Competition from non-C/EBPA-mutant stem cells, with their fitness restored by NOTCH activation, meant that there was no evolutionary space for C/EBPA-mutant stem cells.“If I were working in a situation in which I was likely to experience full-body radiation, I would freeze a bunch of my HSCs,” DeGregori says, explaining that an infusion of healthy HSCs after radiation exposure would likely allow the healthy blood system to out-compete the radiation-exposed HSC with their “programmed mediocrity” (increased differentiation) and even HSC with cancer-causing mutations. “But there’s also hope that in the future, we could offer drugs that would restore the fitness of stem cells left over after radiation.”For more information: www.ucdenver.edu/academics/colleges/medicalschool/centers/cancercenter/P… FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Patient Positioning Radiation Therapy | August 07, 2019 Qfix kVue One Proton Couch Top Validated by Mevion Medical Systems Qfix and Mevion Medical Systems announced that a special version of the kVue One Proton couch top is now both validated… read morecenter_img News | Radiation Therapy | August 16, 2019 Drug Accelerates Blood System’s Recovery After Radiation, Chemotherapy A drug developed by UCLA physician-scientists and chemists speeds up the regeneration of mouse and human blood stem… read more News | Brachytherapy Systems | August 14, 2019 Efficacy of Isoray’s Cesium Blu Showcased in Recent Studies August 14, 2019 — Isoray announced a trio of studies recently reported at scientific meetings and published in medica read more News | Mammography | August 14, 2019 Imago Systems Announces Collaboration With Mayo Clinic for Breast Imaging Image visualization company Imago Systems announced it has signed a know-how license with Mayo Clinic. • Ministry of Education Introduces Rules to Use Cell Phone in Classes

first_imgThe time has arrived for the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) to determine the use of devices in classrooms. Therefore, MEP presented the regulations for the use of cell phones for high school students last Monday. Costa Rica is the first Latin American country to develop such a guide. The authorities created these regulations through a process that involved students, parents, teachers, administrative staff and school directors of Cartago, the Department of Technological Services of MEP, Fundación Omar Dengo and Fundación Telefónica.“Movilizate”, a strategy developed by the MEP in 2016 after a directive allowed the use of cell phones in classes.“We are aware that our country requires a curricular transformation that encompasses all educational processes and is involved in educating the young,” said Alicia Vargas, Vice Minister of Education. She said that the use of cell phones requires cultural, educational and other changes.Vargas highlighted the pioneering contribution of the regulations, and stated that it is not possible to demonize technological resources that are of daily use for students, but must be used in development. For Leda Muñoz, director of the Omar Dengo Foundation, this alliance seeks to promote the appropriation of technologies for the development of people’s skills.
