  • UN agencies assist postwar Angola with providing social services to civilians

Sixty per cent of Angola’s children suffer from chronic malnutrition and 45 per cent do not go to school. UN agencies and development bodies such as the World Bank agree that investment in the country, coupled with effective partnerships, will yield rewards for Angolans. Angola took a significant step on its long road to recovery when it partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for a national campaign to protect children from measles, a highly contagious disease that kills more young Angolans than any other preventable ailment. Some 7.1 million children – 92 per cent of the population aged 9 months to 15 years – were vaccinated during the National Measles Campaign, which ended on 31 May. UNICEF estimates that 70,000 child lives and $16.8 million in medical costs will now be saved. UNICEF is also supporting the “Back to School” initiative, the country’s biggest education campaign to date, which has benefited 500,000 children. In addition, the Government has announced funding for a further 29,000 teachers across the country.”This remains a decisive time in Angola with much to do. Social services were basically wiped out here, hundreds of thousands of Angolans are returning home, and many challenges remain in achieving universal education and routine immunization,” UNICEF Representative Mario Ferrari said.Assisting with the repatriation of Angolans abroad, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) last Friday relocated the first group of 543 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The agency is providing food and a package of domestic items, including blankets, kitchen sets and plastic sheeting to the returnees. A second repatriation convoy of Angolan refugees is due to leave Tuesday from Kilueka and Nkondo camps in Bas-Congo Province. UNHCR in Katanga has received 16 additional trucks, which will allow the agency to gradually increase the number of refugees on each convoy. read more

  • Poor shooting dooms Ohio State womens basketball against Michigan

Redshirt-junior guard Amy Scullion (25) looks for a shot during a game against Michigan Jan. 5 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU lost, 64-49.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorComing off its biggest win of the season against then-No. 17 Purdue at home Thursday, the Ohio State women’s basketball team failed to build on the momentum, falling to Michigan 64-49.As things got underway at the Schottenstein Center, OSU (11-7, 1-1) struggled to shoot the ball, only shooting 6-32 from the field in the first half. The Buckeyes headed into the break trailing 25-13 and were unable to recover in the second half.OSU coach Kevin McGuff said it was tough to lose after the game, especially to rival Michigan, on the heels of a big win.“It’s tough. It’s disappointing because all the things we were so good at on Thursday, all the things we can control we didn’t today,” McGuff said. “And that’s not to give Michigan credit because they played well and they deserved to win the game based on their effort and execution, but I was very disappointed in how we responded to a great win on Thursday.”The 13 points were a season low in a half for OSU, who also shot eight percent from beyond the arc in the game’s first 20 minutes.Despite starting the second half with a bucket on the team’s first possession, things did not improve for OSU as the game progressed. It was tied for the lowest total OSU has put up this season, only scoring 49 three times against Georgia Nov. 17, Connecticut Dec. 1 and Cincinnati Dec. 15.Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said the key to holding OSU’s offense in check was stopping the guards from penetrating the basket.“We spoke all week about trying to slow them down and trying to really zone up and gap and take away their penetration, take away their ability to get to the free throw line … that was something we really focused on,” Arico said. “Make them have to beat us from the outside.”OSU finished the day shooting 20-64, including only hitting six of 25 shots from beyond the arc. The Buckeyes also struggled turning the ball over, giving it away to Michigan 14 times in the game.Arico said she was content with letting the Buckeyes take a lot of 3-pointers as long as they weren’t getting the easy shot.“Their guards off the bounce, we didn’t think we were going to be able to contain them,” Arico said. “So we were going to try to let them score from the outside and see what happened and tonight they didn’t make as many shots.”Sophomore guard Ameryst Alston led the Buckeyes with 15 points, but was one of only two Buckeyes to reach double figures.OSU’s second leading scorer, sophomore guard Cait Craft, came into the night averaging 9.9 points per contest, but only managed two points against the Wolverines. The Wolverines (10-4, 1-0) were paced by freshman guard Siera Thompson and junior guard Shannon Smith, who scored 18 and 17 points, respectively.Thompson said the team executed its game plan well, which allowed them to pull away from OSU.“We just executed the game plan and my teammates found me and I was trying to be aggressive and attack the bigs and get them into foul trouble,” Thompson said. “Our game plan just worked out today.”It was McGuff’s first Big Ten loss as coach of the Buckeyes, and the loss ends a four game win streak for OSU.The Buckeyes will look to bounce back as they head to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the Hoosiers in their first Big Ten road match, scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. read more

  • Ebola outbreak in Guinea could become regional epidemic

first_imgTHE LOCATION OF an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Guinea means it could spread across borders to become a regional epidemic, an aid agency has warned.Plan Ireland is calling for Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to launch a co-ordinated response to the outbreak in the region.Almost sixty deaths have been reported so far, the majority in Forest Guinea, close to the border with these neighbouring countries.“Fear”“Even though most people are going about their normal business, there is a strong fear of the disease in the communities,” Mamady Dramé, Plan’s programme unit manager in Macenta, Forest Guinea, said.Local authorities are working with religious leaders in mosques and churches to provide information to people on preventive measures. It is critical that people receive clear and accurate information on what they can do to protect themselves.Dramé noted that some people have left the area for Guinea’s capital, Conakry.Fears that the virus had spread to the capital were dismissed this morning.Samples taken from three suspected cases of Ebola, which led to two deaths in the capital Conakry, had tested negative for the virus.A Health Minister official said the Pasteur Institute was still working on identifying the virus behind the fever cases in the capital and would know more “in the coming hours”.VirulentEbola, one of the world’s most virulent diseases, was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 1976 and the country has had eight outbreaks. The most recent epidemic, also in the DRC, infected 62 people and left 34 dead between May and November 2012, according to the country’s health ministry. There are fears it could be used in a biological weapons attack.According to researchers, the virus multiplies quickly, overwhelming the immune system’s ability to fight the infection, and there is no treatment or vaccine available.Additional reporting © AFP, 2014Previously: Ebola confirmed as source of Guinea epidemic >last_img read more

  • This Norwegian Town Hasnt Buried a Body Since 1950

first_img Life is a bit different in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost city, where the sun sets in October and doesn’t rise again until March, docile reindeer wander through town, and the laws are few and far between. For instance, there is a ban on cats, a restriction on how much alcohol an individual can purchase each month, and a requirement that anyone venturing outside carry a rifle for protection against polar bears.Oh, and it’s illegal to die in Longyearbyen.Sort of.As the story goes, authorities “banned dying” in 1950, when they discovered bodies buried in deep layers of permafrost were not decomposing because of the extreme cold.Rather than rotting into worm food, the remains of residents who died of the 1918 flu pandemic were being preserved in the frozen ground. Scientists fear those corpses may still contain live strains of the same virus that wiped out 5 percent of the world’s population. In fact, when examiners (circa 2008) removed tissue from a man who died in Longyearbyen, they found traces of the influenza virus from 90 years earlier. A similar situation recently occurred in the Alaskan permafrost. So, to avoid future breakouts (and, frankly, overpopulation), the town’s graveyard stopped accepting stiffs, and started shipping terminal patients off to Oslo and other parts of Norway to live out their days.Longyearbyen (which literally means “The Longyear Town”) was founded by American John Longyear in 1906. Now, it boasts a population of more than 2,100 people—and an average annual temperature of 18℉.And while it is unclear how big a risk viruses and bacteria in dead-and-buried bodies pose to living residents, the city is taking no chances. In 1998, a team of scientists studying the Spanish Flu wore modified spacesuits and ensured none of the tissue samples thawed before they reached a specialized facility in the US.Like much of Scandinavia, Longyearbyen looks like a beautiful, if not chilly, place to retire and ride out your golden years. Nintendo Who knew throwing banana peels at your significant other during a car race could keep passion going strong? According to a new survey conducted by internet service CenturyLink, gaming — and especially playing Nintendo’s Mario Kart — has a positive impact on love lives.CenturyLink surveyed over 1,000 people to see if PC and console gaming has had a positive or negative impact on their romantic relationships. One in three people between 18 and 24 said games help their relationships. That favorable view trended downward with older survey respondents.  CenturyLink “Romantic partners from the millennial generation grew up with video games as a large part of their lives,” said James Gaskin, a game developer and professor of business at Brigham Young University. “Therefore, gaming is simply more natural and accepted. Whereas with older generations, a partner who played video games was perceived as juvenile and irresponsible.”The game couples said most positively affected their relationships was Mario Kart. First-person shooter game Call of Duty and role-playing game Skyrim round out the top three for keeping the romance alive among players.Conversely, of the 1,000 respondents, only 42 said gaming led to a breakup. In 2018, video game addiction (mostly notably to Fortnite) was cited as cause for divorce in the UK. • New mobile Phishing Method using fake address bar and scroll locking

first_imgNew mobile Phishing Method using fake address bar and scroll locking by Martin Brinkmann on April 29, 2019 in Internet, Security – Last Update: April 29, 2019 – 11 commentsPhishing, the attempt to steal important data such as login information, passwords, or credit card numbers from unsuspecting users, is still a major threat on today’s Internet. Microsoft’s Security Intelligence report saw phishing emails increase by 250% in 2018 alone. Most web browsers come with certain defenses, usually in form of blacklists and other defensive measures to detect phishing attacks. One problem with the approach is that it addresses known phishing sites for the most part. The Inception Bar is a new phishing method designed specifically for mobile. Many mobile web browsers hide the address bar when a user starts to scroll to expand the content of the active webpage. Since space is a premium on mobile, it makes sense to use the address space for that. Doing so removes the strongest identifying indicator for that webpage, and it also makes way for the new phishing method.Basically, what the phishing method does is put a fake copy of the address bar at the top of the screen in the fixed location the address bar is found in usually. Browsers would normally display the address bar again when users scroll up but the implementation of a scroll lock on the page prevents that from happening. The effect is that the fake address bar — that looks similar to the real one — is shown to users and that it becomes difficult to exit the page. Even worse, since it is fake, it is possible to make it display any site URL. A dedicated web developer could create a full copy of Chrome’s address bar and not just a lookalike. You can see it in action on James Fisher’s website. Note that you will experience this method first hand if you use the mobile version of Chrome to access the site; on desktop, you may watch the animated GIF to see how it works when you connect using mobile devices.Fisher’s method works in Chrome for mobile; he notes that one could check for the user agent to display similar fake address bars for other mobile web browsers.I accessed the site on Chrome Stable and Chrome Canary for Android. The replacement worked in Canary but it did not in Chrome Stable. Whether that is caused by a setting in the browser or something else is unclear. You can get out of it by activating any link on the site if you are stuck in mobile Chrome.Detecting that it is fakeFor now, it is easy to detect whether the address bar is real or fake; the tab and menu icons don’t do a thing, and it is not possible to edit the URL either.Things could get more complicated if the phishing method is developed further. Someone could use a form instead that accepts input and make the icons behave more or less like they would. The tab count that is displayed could still be an indicator, and most users probably know the site they accessed and may notice that the new site displayed is different from it.Now You: What is your take on this method?SummaryArticle NameNew mobile Phishing Method using fake address bar and scroll lockingDescriptionA new phishing method displays a fake address bar to mobile Internet users and prevents them from scrolling up to display the real one again.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Officials previously warned the government could shut down soon if emergency measures were not taken. The approval ends a months-long heated debate where legislators rejected other proposals to generate money including a 14 percent value-added tax as the U.S. territory’s economic crisis worsened. If Garcia signs the measure, it will help Puerto Rico access the market and issue up to $2.95 billion in bonds as planned, said economist Jose Villamil, a former U.N. consultant and CEO of an economic and planning consulting firm. But government officials still need to take other steps to help boost the economy, including implementing a tax reform, he said in a phone interview.“Clearly, the fiscal situation will not be solved by this bill,” he said, adding that the sales tax increase could have been lower had legislators approved it earlier this year.“We would be in a much better position today,” he said. “A lot of important revenue was lost during that time.” Former Arizona Rep. from NAFTA without support from Congress though he has repeatedly threatened to do so Many lawmakers have said they would move to stop Trump if he attempts to withdraw from the deal and the move would likely face legislative and legal challengesThe withdrawal process would require Trump to give Mexico and Canada 6 months’ notice of his intent to leave the pactEnding NAFTA without a replacement would cause large-scale economic disruption across North America and beyond Companies accustomed to moving products across borders with few or no taxes would see costs jump – price hikes that would pass to consumers – and domestic producers would find their access to foreign markets diminishedCanada is the No 1 destination for American products shipped abroad and more than 8 million US jobs are supported by trade with Canada according to the US Chamber of CommerceThe move would shelter some domestic industries from foreign competition part of Trump’s aim to revitalize some domestic industries that have opted to move production overseasUS lawmakers have generally backed NAFTA saying the overall economic benefits of cheaper products and greater efficiency have outweighed the negative consequences of job losses But Trump has focused on areas where industrial decline has led to deep economic hardshipTrump’s renewed threat to withdraw from NAFTA comes as US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland are set to resume negotiations WednesdayThe two sides are divided over substantive issues such as rules governing trade of dairy products patent protections for pharmaceuticals and disagreements over the process for resolving trade disputesCanadian officials accused the US side of refusing to offer concessions That sentiment appeared validated Friday morning when the Toronto Star published comments Trump had made in which he told Bloomberg journalists that negotiations to rework NAFTA would take place only on his termsTrump is attempting to get a new NAFTA deal signed before current President Enrique Pea Nieto leaves office Dec 1 Nieto’s successor Andrés Manuel López Obrador has had representatives at the US-Mexico talks but if the deal is not signed before he takes office he could add new demands and complicate the dealThat timeline was the impetus for Trump’s Friday letter to Congress notifying them of the preliminary agreement with Mexico That letter started a 90-day required notice period for Congress before the president can legally sign a new dealNow under US trade law Trump has 30 days from Friday to get final text to CongressIf Canada is not included in that final text it would be legally very difficult — if not impossible — to include the country laterFor Canada losing access to the US market would be a severe economic blow And Trump has further threatened to put 25 percent tariffs on cars and auto parts sent from Canada into the United States – a move he could make without Congress’ permissionForeign leaders "keep underestimating Trump on trade" said Dan DiMicco a former steel executive and trade adviser to Trump who was with the president Friday in Charlotte North Carolina "If he’s not tough on everybody why is China going to believe he’s going to be tough on them"But for Trump failing to get Canada on board would set up a showdown with Congress in which all parties would be in murky legal territory It’s unclear whether the authority Trump has to renegotiate NAFTA extends to a deal done with just Mexico and lawmakers – as well as Mexican officials – continue to stress the need for Canada’s inclusionThis article was written by Heather Long a reporter for The Washington PostThe late director of a Dutch fertility center is now the
