  • COP22 Meets Targets Exceeds Expectations Mezouar

Marrakech – The COP22, which runs until November 18th in Marrakech, met targets and exceeded expectations, said Thursday president of the UN climate summit, Salaheddine Mezouar.“This COP is different from all those that preceded it and a demonstration of commitment at all levels, as confirmed by the presence of more than 70 Heads of State and Government” at the High Level segment of this global event, said Mezouar following a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.He also welcomed the commitment of non-state actors and the “achievements” made since the entry into force of the Paris Agreement. Mezouar said that the Conference “marks a turning point in the implementation of the international community’s commitments and in the mobilization of initiatives”.The Moroccan presidency will continue, throughout the next year, its work in favor of mobilizing and facilitating access to finance to help implement projects, he affirmed. The COP22 is meant to operationalize the Paris Agreement, which entered into force on November 4 and accelerate action before 2020 to reduce the impact of climate change, while respecting the human rights set out in the agreement. It is an opportunity to address several themes related to agriculture, food security, energy, forests, industry, transport and water. read more

  • Morocco and EU Discuss Amending Agriculture Deal

Rbat – Talks continue of amending a controversial European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) decision regarding Western Sahara, as Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met in Brussels on Monday with Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. An EU press release said that the two sides discussed the amendment of the Morocco-EU agriculture agreement, after the European Court of Justice ruled in December 2016 that is not applicable to goods from Western Sahara. The two parties have since held several talks to come to an agreement to “preserve” their partnership, as they said in February when talks kicked off. A meeting in February marked an attempt by Morocco and the EU to alleviate the tension that followed the European court’s ruling, which dealt a strong blow to the relations between the two parties. Soon after the decision, Morocco warned Brussels that cooperation between the two, especially in countering illegal immigration, would be undermined. While Monday’s communiqué did not go beyond the usual diplomatic talk about discussing “common challenges” for Mediterranean and African countries, the meeting took place in a special context. In late November, Ivory Coast will hold the fifth joint summit between the EU and the African Union (AU).Morocco is campaigning to prevent the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) from taking part in the meeting, amid a push from Algeria and South Africa to include their ally on the pretext that it is a member of the AU, despite its absence from previous summits.Algeria’s ambassador to Brussels, Amar Belani, had previously claimed that Polisario representatives will attend the conference, which sources from the EU, speaking to the Moroccan news site Le Desk, denied. read more

  • Afghanistan UN refugee agency deplores attacks on aid workers

“We are extremely concerned about repeated security incidents involving aid workers,” Maki Shinohara, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told reporters in Kabul. On Saturday morning, workers from the Demining Agency for Afghanistan (DAFA), which partners with the UN Mine Action Centre, were clearing mines in Zhare Dasht when they came under attack by four assailants driving up to their work site. One DAFA driver was injured and the group’s vehicles were sprayed with bullets. “What is particularly alarming is that the assailants reportedly intended to gather and kill the demining group, but were distracted” from carrying out the task, Ms. Shinohara said. The Kandahar authorities immediately sent armed guards in ten vehicles to the scene. Two suspects were arrested, but the assailants’ vehicle reportedly drove off into the mountains. The UNHCR spokesperson noted that Zhare Dasht, which hosts some 40,000 displaced Afghans, is flanked by armed guards, but following this incident, aid workers will likely have to resort to armed escorts to and from the settlement. “We condemn with strongest possible terms such cowardly acts of attacking Afghan aid workers who are working hard to help the Afghan people,” Ms. Shinohara said. “The all-too-frequent security incidents frustrate assistance activities, but we will continue to help those in need to the best of our ability.” read more

  • First Enders Game trailer should make fans uneasy

first_imgAfter years of back and forth, rumors, and heartbreak, a movie adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel Ender’s Game is set to be released later this year. The first official trailer dropped yesterday, and it’s chock-full of fast cuts and dialog delivered by a mildly disinterested Harrison Ford. There’s not much plot, but it looks pretty.Ender’s Game is widely considered one of the finest pieces of science fiction ever written. Originally published in 1985 by author Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game follows the childhood of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin. At an early age Ender shows an aptitude for strategic thinking, so he is recruited to attend Battle School, where he is trained as an elite soldier. To Ender this seems like a perfect way to escape from his sadistic older brother, but Battle School is serious business. The new trailer, at least, does a good job of setting up the premise: Earth is engaged in a war with an alien race, and things aren’t going well. Old military tactics are useless against this new enemy, so Earth’s leaders turn to the young in hopes of training a new kind of military mastermind. The main concern being voiced about the trailer is the generic action vibe it gives off. The novel has garnered so much praise because of how it makes you feel about the characters — the war is almost secondary. This is just a 2-minute trailer, so perhaps some of the complicated emotional layers are still there. The trailer could even be designed to sell this as an action flick to gain more mainstream interest, thus hiding a more faithful adaptation of the book. The film will star Asa Butterfield (of Hugo) as Ender Wiggin, alongside Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Abigail Breslin. Those are big names for a sci-fi movie. That should serve as a reminder of how well-liked the novel is.Ender’s Game is scheduled to hit theaters November 1 in the US.last_img read more

  • Read the Prespes agreement on the Macedonia name issue in English

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram The Prespes agreement was released in the English language by Greek Parliament, just days ahead of the demonstration protesting the name change at Syntagma Square. The document focuses on the recognition of FYROM as the Republic of Northern Macedonia, however also clarifies details concerning the area’s identity, language and people. Not only does it deal with the name dispute, but it also outlines the future collaboration between the Skopje and Athens on issues such as cooperation in different fields, such as defence and education, civil protection, and settlement of disputes.Supporters of the agreement feel that it would put an end to a 28-year dispute and lead to a new era in Greek-FYROM ties. Critics, however, state that the document fails to deliver on certain points. A rally was held on Sunday with clashes between protestors and the police at the Athens city centre. The Greek government is set to ratify the agreement this week following a vote of confidence that took place last week.Read it for yourself, by CLICKING ON THE LINK.last_img read more

  • MCU News Punisher Gets Poster New York Finds Religion and Black Panther

first_img Tom Holland Responds to Disney-Sony Spider-Man Feud‘Game of Thrones’ Star Kit Harington Joins Marvel’s &#… Stay on target Aside from The Defenders, The Punisher is probably Marvel’s most anticipated Netflix show. That’s for a good reason. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was by far the best part of Daredevil season two. We’re still a little ways off from the show’s premiere, but Netflix revealed the poster for the Series in Entertainment Weekly ahead of Comic Con 2017. In case you were wondering, Bernthal still looks great as The Punisher. The Punisher (Credit: Marvel, Netflix via Entertainment Weekly)That’s pretty much exactly how you want a Punisher series to look. If that art looks familiar to you, that’s because it’s drawn by Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. The poster will be available for fans to purchase at Marvel’s booth at Comic Con in San Diego. At this point though, the poster just makes us want to see the show. The Punisher premieres on Netflix sometime this fall, following The Defenders‘ premiere on August 18.In other MCU news, a fan found an Easter egg in Spider-Man: Homecoming that implies the Avengers may have inadvertently brought a religion to New York. Specifically, the old Norse religion. The image comes from Reddit user UNITBlackArchive. The scene in question has Peter Parker and Aunt May eating at a Thai restaurant.Spider-Man: Homecoming (Photo: Marvel Studios via Reddit)It’s hard to make out in that photo, but the sign on the side says “Korean Church of Asgard.” It would appear that with the existence of Thor and Loki now being well known on the Earth of the MCU, Asgardian churches have started popping up. That’s an understandable reaction to seeing your city saved from a supernatural threat by the Norse GOd of Thunder. It’s a cool subtle nod to the fact that average New Yorkers are still dealing with that battle in a number of different ways. I love it when the Marvel movies and TV shows do stuff like this. Even if it can get a little silly sometimes. (Like the guy selling bootleg DVDs of “the incident” on the street in Luke Cage.) I wish the MCU would do more stuff like this. The most interesting parts of the old Stan Lee comics were always how normal people reacted to the crazy superheroics going on around them. It’d be cool to see the movies lean into that aspect a little more. Mostly, I just want to know what an Asgardian church service looks like.Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. (Photo: Screenshot via YouTube)Finally, now that Spider-Man has come out, the Marvel movie we’re really looking forward to is Black Panther. Everything we’ve seen from it at this point looks so cool; it’s a shame we have to wait until February to see it. Black Panther will fight a few of his classic comics villains in the movie, but one had to undergo a few changes to be acceptable in 2017.In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Nate Moore spoke about updating Black Panther’s most iconic foe, Man-Ape. In the comics, Man-Ape, or M’Baku eats and bathed in the blood of white gorillas for strength. He also wears a suit that looks like the body of a white gorilla. Moore said they immediately realized dressing a black man as a gorilla and calling him “Man-Ape” is a real bad look.So first, they never call him Man-Ape in the movie. The character, played by Winston Duke, will only be known as M’Baku. His armor has been redesigned, but as his religious cult still worships the gorilla, there are recognizable elements of the animal in the armor. That’s an important distinction. It looks like a man’s armor. Not an ape costume.“Having a black character dress up as an ape, I think there’s a lot of racial implications that don’t sit well, if done wrong. But the idea that they worship the gorilla gods is interesting because it’s a movie about the Black Panther who, himself, is a sort of deity in his own right,” Moore said. Here’s the armor they came up with.M’Baku (Winston Duke)(Credit: Kwaku Alston/©Marvel Studios 2018 via Entertainment Weekly)That actually looks pretty cool. Moore says that M’Baku will try to overthrow T’Challa because he disagrees with him over Wakanda’s role in the world. M’Baku believes that Wakanda should stay isolated, and thinks T’Challa’s father should never have gone to the United Nations. However, this conflict plays out, after seeing that image I just can’t wait until we get to see more of this movie.Black Panther arrives in theaters February 16, 2018.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

  • Hate Story 3 Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 Half Girlfriend at Censor

first_imgBollywood films are all about investments and returns, like any business venture. Just like other businesses face risks like competition, changing lifestyles and cyclical business conditions, so do films. But one risk that is distinct to films is the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has turned more prudish of late. The Board had created a furore after cutting “short kissing scenes” between actor Daniel Craig and his leading ladies in the James Bond movie Spectre, prompting the famous “sanskari bond” comment on social media.A “bold” scene cut or a dialogue muted has the potential to impact the overall appeal of films and consequently, box office collections. Now, when such films are produced and distributed by listed companies, the hit is on investors also, unlike unlisted firms where it is only upon the promoters, their associates and lenders.Film production and distribution Super Cassettes Industries Limited, more popular as T Series and the maker of upcoming film Hate Story 3 has managed to get an “A” certificate from the CBFC, paving the way for its release on 4 December. But they had to replace the word “bhagwan” with “uparwala” when the Board felt that “bhagwan” would hurt the sentiments of a particular community. Fortunately, Super Cassettes is not a listed company. The film features Sharman Joshi, Zarine Khan, Daisy Shah and Karan Singh Grover. “We’ve received an adult (A) certification and the erotic aspect of the film has been retained. We’re happy with the censors and the audience will also be happy with the film,” said Sharman, reported IANS.The impact is unlikely to be adverse at the box office.Balaji Telefilms, a listed company that makes television serials and films, has queued up a series of films for the next six to eight months, including “Udta Punjab” and “Half Girlfriend” based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel by the same name.Should these movies face Censor Board’s hurdles for some of the scenes, their box office prospects could suffer and consequently, gullible shareholders. As it is, the company’s “Kya Kool Hai Hum 3” could not be released in October as scheduled, as it is yet to get the Censor Board’s nod.Another risk unique to films is two expected blockbusters clashing at the box office. A recent instance is that of Sanjeev Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani” and Shah Rukh Khan’s “Dilwale”. Both the films are slated to be released on 18 December and this likely to hit their box office collections, though analysts feel that the Christmas and yearend holidays will see the movies through.Eros International Media, listed on the BSE, is the global distributor of “Bajirao Mastani” and an analyst expects the movie to earn “Rs 200 crore to Rs 300 crore on a worldwide basis.””Bajirao Mastani” features Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka. Ranveer plays the role of Bajirao and Deepika of Mastani, while Priyanka appears as Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai.Directed by Rohit Shetty, “Dilwale” stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. The Eros stock closed at Rs 239.80, a gain of 4.99% on Wednesday on the BSE, though far lower from its price of Rs 416 six months ago, on 2 June.Balaji Telefilms ended the day with a loss of 3.97% to close at Rs 137.60. The stock has more than doubled in the past six months.last_img read more

  • There are plenty of legitimate reasons to question the Lakers hiring of

first_imgColin has doubts about Magic Johnson, just like he has doubts about John LynchDan LeBatard came under fire for comments he made regarding Magic Johnson’s qualifications to run the Lakers’ basketball operations. LeBatard implied that Magic keeps getting gigs because of his charm and charisma, despite failing as a coach, talk show host, and what he characterized as a lackluster tenure on as an NBA TV analyst.Fellow ESPN’er Keyshawn Johnson thought the comments were racist, and PTI host Michael Wilbon sent a series of Tweets criticizing LeBatard for conveniently ignoring Johnson’s post-basketball business success.Today in The Herd, Colin didn’t defend LeBatard’s comments, but said it’s fair to question any GM entering a professional sports job with no prior front office experience. He was critical of John Lynch’s lack of experience when he was hired as the Niners GM. It’s fair to say the same applies to Magic. There are plenty of legitimate questions.“I think it’s actually healthy to question Magic and John Lynch. I have major doubts about both. And another reason I do, is because I’ve watched Phil Jackson in New York. He’s a smart dude. He’s been a disaster.”In today’s NBA, Lou Williams to Houston is as big a trade as Boogie Cousins to New Orleans. The NBA trade deadline came and went, and the biggest name that switched teams was Boogie Cousins. Colin thinks Boogie won’t be winning in New Orleans, so the move is irrelevant in terms of impact. He thinks Lou Williams moving to Houston is the biggest move of the deadline in terms of ultimate playoff impact. In today’s NBA, a knock down three-point shooter like Williams could allow the Rockets to push Golden State in the West.“It’s such a three-centric league that Lou Williams to Houston feels every bit as big to me as Boogie Cousins to New Orleans.”Guests:Jeff Gordon – NASCAR Champion joins the show to look ahead this weekend’s Daytona 500; how driver strategy differs depending on the track; how his image has changed over the years; why it takes days to recover from driving in Daytona; and if he ever stared down another driver during a neck-and-neck finish.Gregg Doyel – Indianapolis Star columnist joins the show to explain why he thinks Larry Bird failed at the trade deadline; why he thinks Paul George is eventually headed to L.A.; if Paul George takes too many nights off; if it’s fair to question Magic’s qualifications; why Tom Crean shouldn’t be fired; if Indiana has unrealistic expectations.Chris Broussard – FS1 NBA analyst joins the show to explain why the Celtics passed on Paul George;  if he’s surprised Jimmy Butler wasn’t traded; why Lou Williams is the most significant addition; and if any upcoming rookie can make an instant impact next season.Bobby Marks – NBA Insider at The Vertical joins the show to talk about the learning curve for Magic Johnson; why the Lakers need more than  just one star to get back on track; and which rookie can make an impact next year.Ric Bucher – Sirius XM host and NBA writer at Bleacher Report joins the show to talk Magic as GM; what attributes can help him in the job; if the Lakers can mimic the Warriors model; and if it’s a done deal that Paul George will eventually be a Laker.last_img read more

  • Kontides steals gold again

first_imgBy Richard Aspland – World SailingIt was a case of déjà vu on the final day of racing at Sailing’s World Cup Series in Hyères, France as Cypriot Laser sailor Pavlos Kontides once again stole gold from underneath the nose of his rival. On the second day of live Medal Racing from the south coast of France, it was the turn of the One and Two Person Dinghies to have their day. And the action didn’t disappoint.A colder, overcast day with a steady 8-12 knot breeze did nothing to dampen the spirits of the final few lucky World Cup Series medallists.Pavlos Kontides (CYP) must have been sitting on the start line of the Laser Medal Race thinking, ‘I’ve been here before’.At the 2016 World Cup Final in Melbourne, Kontides went in to the final race in second overall fighting for a gold against Australia’s Matt Wearn. He won that battle and the gold. This time around, the job at hand was the same, the only difference was Italy’s Francesco Marrai was now in his way. The result? Well that was the same, gold for Kontides. The Cypriot may walk away from Hyères, France with the Laser title, but it couldn’t have been closer. Kontides and Marrai finish the regatta level on 63 points. In the end it came down to the Medal Race result, and Kontides knew this, “It was a battle out there and I was in second or third. Francesco managed to pull himself back up to fifth but I knew my current position would give me the win. I got overtaken but then got my position back in the downwind and that got me the gold. with the department’s Office for Civil Rights Rogers says The office “told us that the way they were interpreting the guidance it should include the benign variants We quickly got to work we compiled that information completed that request yesterday and sent it to all these patients” The four patients represented by ACLU are not appeased (The organization declined to say whether it had previously been working with the three others) It’s “my body my blood my data my choice how I wish to share my information” said AnneMarie Ciccarella one of the plaintiffs during a press conference earlier today Ten years ago Ciccarella was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at 49 and with a strong family history of cancer she followed her doctor’s advice and got BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing through Myriad Mutations in both genes are linked to a higher risk of breast ovarian and other cancers Ciccarella’s results however were equivocal; Myriad told her it found a “variant of unknown significance” on BRCA1 and another on BRCA2 Ciccarella wants all her DNA information made widely available to researchers and in particular wants to donate it to a database called ClinVar ClinVar is collecting DNA findings on as many people as possible; a separate but related database called ClinGen is trying to understand what those findings mean (More information on both databanks is here) Myriad has provoked the ire of some scientists because the company has declined to submit its voluminous BRCA1 and BRCA2 data to ClinVar unlike a number of other testing companies Rogers says that’s because it wants to protect patient privacy A pair of scientists has launched an effort to seek Myriad testing results from patients and providers as a substitute One of them Heidi Rehm one of the leaders of ClinGen and an associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston wrote a letter supporting ACLU’s complaint Siding with her were Thomas Hudson and Peter Goodhand two leaders of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health a collaborative trying to improve the sharing of genomic data It’s running a major effort to aggregate data on BRCA genes called the BRCA Challenge Hudson and Goodhand called on the HHS Office for Civil Rights to explicitly say that the regulation “includes variant calls”—decisions about whether a variant is benign for example—“and raw sequencing files giving patients the right under HIPAA to routinely access them and thus contribute to research and improved health” “I think it’s much ado about nothing” Myriad’s Rogers says of the complaint He says that Myriad has previously provided polymorphism data to the rare patient who asks and will certainly do so now if required under HIPAA ACLU wants more assurance than that “We need to know that it’s a change in their position” says ACLU senior staff attorney Sandra Park She says she knows of another person who submitted a request for polymorphism data before the January regulation change she says and who was denied by the company “From February they took the clear position that this data was excluded from what is covered under HIPAA” Is there a broader goal to pressure Myriad into depositing its data into public databases like ClinVar Park is oblique “The best solution on that question is that Myriad just shares it” she says “and discloses this data to patients that request it” Today many UK scientists will likely see the glass as half-full The UK government’s long-awaited Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) was released today and it calls for a flat science budget over the next 4 years While inflationary costs mean that the budget will likely see a cut of about 10% in real terms over that period this scenario is far less dramatic than rumored cuts of 20% to 30% in real cash In fact the flat budget scenario was the best of three options recently considered by the Royal Society in an analysis given to the government as it was producing the CSR In that analysis the society labeled its flat budget proposal scenario as "Weathering the Storm"—versus "Slash and Burn" and "Game Over" for scenarios representing cash cuts of 10% and 20% respectively—and concluded: "A flat cash settlement would be painful but manageable and could only be delivered through substantial efficiency savings and some rebalancing of investment priorities" The society’s analysis however was done before the coalition government indicated significant cuts to the block grants given to universities some of which goes to cover research costs UK science bodies and prominent researchers have already issued a wide range of reactions to the CSR many expressing relief but others continued concern Colin Blakemore former head of the Medical Research Council saw the budget as a victory for the vigorous lobbying done recently by scientists: "It is wonderful to learn that Government has listened to the scientific community Collectively we have made the case that funding science is not a cost but a way to invest in creating a stronger economy which is the best way to guarantee the recovery that will benefit everyone It will now be important to maintain the dialogue with government as it reviews budgetary commitments for the future" Others are less satisfied "A 10% cut over four years is a significant blow to the UK’s competitiveness The Government has failed to recognise what all Charities know an economic downturn is the time to invest in fundraising to ensure future prosperity It is Research and Development coupled with skilled people that will deliver growth Our international competitors have recognised that: the coalition Government has yet to fully accept that reality" Mark Downs CEO of the Society of Biology said in a statement David Willetts the UK science minister will be holding a briefing later today and ScienceInsider and Science magazine will provide further reaction and analysis New Delhi: A 10-member delegation of the Chinese army is in India with an aim
